Wet trunk available soon - as an item

Postby sinister mob - November 24th, 2009, 11:24 pm

So I really want the "wet trunk" that comes with the cargo package. Apparently they will be offering the "trunk" - which I know is the plastic thing under the rug held by the 4 bolts - as an option by itself. I checked with the dealer today while I was picking up my touch-up paint (which they didn't charge me for by the way). I finally got a look at a truck that was in the showroom that had the cargo option. I don't care for the cross bars and I was going to get my own receiver hitch and rear cover so the wet trunk is all that I am missing for "my own" cargo package. They will have it available in early January as a Ford item by itself.

I really like all of the trunk projects I have seen but I am a clean and neat person and really just want to unbolt the old and bolt in the new piece. The extra space will fit everything I currently have in the back and I can get my trunk back. Not sure on the price yet. It will be my x-mas gift though.

I have the factory cargo package on my Edge. While there's no roll-out cargo cover for the Edge in that package, there's a similar segmented plastic tray around the spare (which is inside in the Edge). The entire cargo floor lifts at the liftgate opening (it's hinged at the base of the rear seats). The tray segments are large enough to hold first aid kits, jumper cables, and several large towels.

The cargo package is definitely a must-have in the Edge, and I'd buy it for an Escape, too.

Also, if you have a 2005-2007 non-Hybrid Escape with a flat cargo area and the jack in a compartment inside the right quarter panel (not under the floor), Ford has an accessory cargo floor that takes advantage of all of the space underneath the floor that the Hybrid uses for batteries. It replaces the entire carpeted load floor with a new carpeted floor that includes a 30" deep, 36" wide, 5" deep cavity covered by a carpeted cover with a latch. Two "fingers" near the rear seats are the hinges, so the cover can be easily taken off. I bought this kit when I had my 2005 Limited.

Ford has three colors for the compartment and door, and here are the part numbers (which are now "superceded" part numbers from the ones I had):

Door
6L8Z-7846140-AAA - Ebony
6L8Z-7846140-AAB - Medium Dark Flint
6L8Z-7846140-AAC - Medium Pebble

Compartment
6L8Z-78115A00-AAA - Ebony
6L8Z-78115A00-AAB - Medium Dark Flint
6L8Z-78115A00-AAC - Medium Pebble

The door and the compartment are around $150 each, depending on the color.

That should be standard equipment on like the XLT and up. Just my opinion. :)

Wonder what the chances would be of finding one of these in the local salvage yards? Hmm...

I wish they had something like this for the 2010:

That is awesome. It makes no sense, other than charging for a cargo option, to NOT have something like that in an SUV as standard. They give you 2 mini slots and the tiny compartment in the right rear to store everything. I wonder what the end cost will be for just the trunk piece when it comes out.

Completely off topic, but Mikey, your Escape changed my opinion of the third-generation. I've been on the fence about whether or not I liked it, mostly due to the front.
I thought the chrome on the front was hideous. :barf: (Don't strike me, third-gen owners)
I hate chrome.
I thought the body colouring was nice, but a bit bland, for the most part. :boring:
The black has a really nice contrast, and makes the front really stand out. I'd almost get one, but I know of a certain blue one that would be kind of sad if I did so.
Anyway, just had to say that. Kudos! :thumb:
Sorry...

We have a Husky liner in the back so I had to look at our limited to see if we have one as I couldn't remember. Yes we do, that's where I put the center headrest I removed for better rear vision.
One difference I noticed with our 07 is we have 4 loop straps instead of metal rings in the corners for tie-down attach points.
