Hi
I have a 2010 Mercury Mariner and want to add a backup camera. I have a old wireless camera that mounts on the licence plate and requires 12 v when in reverse and ground. Since the Mariner has a factory option for a camera I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if the tailgate already has the wiring before I run the wire up and over to the backup lamp.

I'm trying to get a 2010 service DVD, so I'll have an answer for you when I have one.

My guess is that the 2010 backup camera module replaces the 2008-2009 liftgate switch, which was relocated for 2010 to a new handle under the license plate.

If the wiring is already installed, you should be able to find harness 14A583, connector C4234, found in the center of the liftgate below the window (the camera itself would be mounted in the license plate housing).

Pinouts for connector C4234 are as follows:
1 - * (WH) 18 FUSE - 35 OR CIRCUIT BREAKER
2 - DMP19 (NONE) 18 DRAIN
3 - * * Not Used
4 - * (RD) 20 VIDIO+
5 - * (BK) 20 VIDIO-
6 - * (BN-RD) 20 GROUND - LIFTGATE/DECKLID CENTER
7 - * * Not Used
8 - * * Not Used

The service DVDs don't mention any differences in harness part numbers, so the easiest way to find out if you have the connector for the rear view camera is to remove the inner liftgate trim panel. The connector is located between the license plate lamp connectors:

Here's the wiring diagram for E/M/Ts equipped with a factory rear view camera:

If you do have the rear view camera connector in the liftgate, check the connector inside the lower area of the driver-side (left) A-Pillar:

If you find a WHITE with GREEN STRIPE wire (VIDEO +) and a BROWN with VIOLET STRIPE wire (VIDEO -) at pins 15 and 16 on that connector, you can tap into those wires for the video feed if you connect the factory rear view camera.

Ok, Im a bit confused here. So if I had purchased an aftermarket backup camera, I could wire it into the video + and video - to give the aftermarket camera power so it would turn on when put into reverse?

Also in the same token, is there a way to buy the factory backup camera and rearview mirror (with integrated display) from Ford? They dont list it as an accessory that I can see. I wanted one but they only came with the Limited....sometimes I hate it when they do that.

Ford's wiring has power to the mirror whenever the key is in RUN or START. The circuit in the inside mirror (or navigation screen) uses the reverse lamp feed (+12V when on) to display the video from the camera.

From what I remember, that mirror is very expensive from the factory, although it's also available in the aftermarket (Gentex 50-GENK242) for around US$340. There's also a 50-GENK352 with a larger screen, and a larger price tag. You could also buy the factory rear view camera, but you'd need to have the factory wiring harnesses if you don't want to run your own wiring.

Sorry, hehe I guess I didnt ask the correct question lol

Ok, I already purchased an aftermarket wireless backup camera and I need to wire the camera into the reverse light so it will get power when I put the car into reverse. Does the wiring harness(if I have it) provide power to the camera only when the vehicle is put into reverse? In other words could I wire up my aftermarket camera into the video + and video - to get the camera power for reverse? or do I still have to run wires up along one of the pillars to the reverse light?

EDIT

 Ok well.....hit a snag :cuss:

Seems the license plate holder/backup cam frame is too small for the license plate :cuss: :censor: :cuss: I mean....wtf....how can they sell me a freekin device that I cant use? I tried every which way to get the license plate into the holder but it wont fit  , even tried to force it in there but it was a no go..... :wall:

Soo it looks like I have to do a wee bit of modding to do on the holder so I can slip it underneath the old plate holder

Thanks a lot. Well I got it installed and wired up. Found out that I didnt have to remove the lamp assembly because there is a rubber gasket between the assembly and the inside of the cargo area. So I went in through the compartment where the fuel can adapter is held. Let me tell you though...it was a PITA to work in that tight spot. But after 30min of fiddling, I got it wired in and it works. Im a little dissapointed in the receiver unit my backup camera came with as it was built in to this review mirror, the mirror made it hard to see the image cause it was soo reflective. So I removed the mirror and just have the little LCD in the frame. Have to find a place to put it for now. Im going to keep looking at backup cams as this one Im not too happy with it, it works but just not what I expected.

I was wondering I have a OEM reverse Camera in my Ford Escape 2011 Limited. I also have an Avic x930bt with camera video input, I was planning on installing another camera in the back so I can have the display on my HU, Would I be able to tapped into the existing camera there? Get a 18ga wire and tap into the yellow video cable and at the other end put a rca adapter to it so I can plug it into the HU. Can this be done or am I better off installing another camera?
