Just a Cabin filter FYI:
On the 2001-2004 Escape models (& maybe the later models as well), the Cabin Filter installation port (or box or well) is located under the passenger side cowl. I call it the cabin filter airbox. Some (all?) early Escape models did not come from the factory w the cabin filter, but there is a place to put one. To remove the left cowl for cabin filter instalation you may not have to remove the wiper arm. I didn't on my 2002 XLS. Instead, you can cycle the wipers then remove the ignition key when they are in an UP position.

I installed a Micro-Gard GA20070 air filter from O-Reilly's auto parts into the cabin filter airbox on my 2002 Escape XLS. Other cabin filters: using the Wix filter website cross-reference, the Wix 42136 is the same as the MicroGard filter. The Wix 24816 & Fram CF10137 are in my notes, but I'm not sure if those part numbers are right.

Cabin filter part numbers:
Micro-Gard GA20070
Wix 42136
Wix 24816 (?)
Fram CF10137 (?)
.
