2010 Escape 4-cyl CEL P144a Purge Valve

New to the forum. Tried to search this, but didn't find a whole lot. Thanks in advance for any help you all may provide!

I have a 2010 Escape with the 2.5L I-4 with 52000 miles, and it recently had a CEL and was having some issues with hard starting, especially after refueling. Took it to my local Autozone, and got the code P144a, which relates to the evap canister and its purge valve. I see this is a relatively common problem on all Escapes based on some googling and searching on the forums. Instead of taking it to the dealer and letting them charge me $100 just for diagnosis, I'd like to change the purge valve and see if this takes care of it. Part is only $40...

Problem is, I am having trouble finding the purge valve to replace it... I found another thread here with a pic of the engine bay on a 2.3L I-4 with the valve located near the intake, but it's not in the same spot on the newer models.

Anyone ever done this before or know where to find the evap canister purge valve? Thanks!

I'm kinda curious if this is covered by the 60K powertrain warranty. I'll check the parts list at home to see if it shows where the part might sit.

Might see if it's under the emissions warranty.

The purge valve is under the hood near the master cylinder. You should see a hose going over to the intake and another disappearing down under the car. There is also a test port with a green cap on it.

So, sorry for late reply, but I have an update.

Our Escape was doing great for a while. CEL turned off and previous symptoms disappeared. I decided I'd just see what happens. Well, a little later, CEL came back on, and after a fill-up with gas, it had some trouble starting. I decided I would search for this thing one more time. Turns out (as Bluto pointed out above) it IS under the hood, between the throttle body and the radiator. I changed it out yesterday. We'll see if the CEL goes off after a few days. Thanks for all the help on this forum!

I will continue to update this thread so that someone in the future with the same problem may find it and use it to their advantage.

So, the CEL continued to glow amber until today, over a week after install of the new purge valve. This morning, the wife went out to the car, CEL is off, and it has been symptom free since the replacement. If we are trouble free from here on out, I will have saved around $200. The stealership wanted $100 just to diagnose it!

Thanks for the help of the forum.

For the record, most dealerships if not all waive the diagnosis if the repair is done there. Pros and cons.

Glad to hear you got it resolved.

I have a 2010 Mazda Tribute and yesterday my check engine light came on and I took it to AutoZone and got the code P144A. They didn't know what it meant so I took it to my dealer this morning. They told me I need to replace the evaporative canister and purge valve and quoted me $515 to fix it. Sounds pretty similar to this story. Is that a fair price? Any thoughts? I have no idea what I am doing under the hood other than the basics so I don't really want to mess with it myself.

The dealer is full of it. Emissions equipment is covered by warranty for five years or 50,000 miles per the feds. Go back and tell them to fix it.
