Liftgate Rattle '09 Escape

Postby DaveJ - December 10th, 2012, 4:40 pm

After about 50K miles my Escape now has a liftgate rattle coming from the post & lock assembly. I wrapped the post with electrical tape and the rattle went away. However, this lasted only about 2 weeks and I had to replace the tape.

Does anyone know of a somewhat permanent fix for this problem? Does the liftgate need adjustment? Will the lock post just unscrew so I can attempt to install some sort of rubber or plastic sleeve over the post?

Thanks.

Not related, but lubricate your liftgate glass as well. That one was giving me grief recently, and was silenced by the addition of black lithium grease. May also prove availing for the liftgate latch assembly as well.

Apparently the glass hinges on my Escape were worked on at one time when I ran this complaint by the dealership, but they also had to readjust the locking mechanism on the liftgate itself on my Escape.

Hi DaveJ,

Have you stopped by your dealership so they can take a look? Ford certified techs are great at tracking down and resolving issues like this one. Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for sharing your experience and suggestions, Tang and Domain! I'm sure DaveJ appreciates it. :)

DaveJ did you ever find a permanent solution for this?

Mine is doing the same thing. How do you adjust the lock mechanism?

I went through this issue a few months ago. I ripped everything apart then read an easy solution somewhere on line. Wrap a piece of sticky backed velcro around the post that the lift gate catches on when closed. Seemed to have worked.

Mine had a rattle and creaking noise going over speed bumps etc. Dealer replaced with a new latch assembly and no more noise at all. I believe its a newer version than the original.

Mine is squeaky when it's cold. I wrapped some black electrical tape around the post for mine and it stopped. Course now the tape has melted off but it still doesn't squeak.

As per a suggestion I read on the forum a while back, I wrapped the post a few times with blue painters tape and the rattle disappeared.

I first tried wrapping the post with electrical tape. Although it stopped the rattle, it didn't last long. I then wrapped it with metal duct tape and sprayed it with a little lithium grease. This seems to work pretty well and lasts longer than the electrical tape.

I would rather just get it fixed so someday if the dealer has a new designed post or latch.
