Moonroof Problem and Solution

Postby jziggity - June 24th, 2011, 12:42 am

I thought this was worth mentioning here, as a continuation to my moonroof woes. See here for the original story: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9674

The cliff notes version of that link is, plastic moonroof hinge busted, dealer gave me original quote of $1100 to fix. After stopping in at a local custom auto shop today, they took a look at it and gave me a quote of $416 for installing a new cam assembly. That was $187 for the parts, and $229 for 3.5 hours of labor for install.

The dealer originally told me there is no replacing just the broken part, you have to buy an entire new moonroof assembly (less the glass), and rip open the entire roof to replace it. Just the part from the dealer was $900. Yikes.

So, by doing a VERY quick internet search for sunroof installers in my area, I found one closer than the dealership at a savings of 62%, installed! Not bad for a little bit of finger walking across the keyboard.

The written estimate from the custom auto place listed the part and the supplier they get it from. If anyone needs that I can post it here. This is for an 08' Escape XLT. I mentioned to the guy at this new place that I had read here about at least one other person who had more than one failure of the moonroof. He assured me he does a ton of sun/moon roof installs and repairs, and the replacement parts they use are of a much higher quality than the original. So hopefully I won't need to revisit this issue again!

Okay, I thought the estimate was a little more specific on the part. It just shows "cam kit" from TG Automotive, for $187.00. I assume it's from www.tgautomotive.com. Here's a link: http://www.tgautomotive.com/ProductDeta ... tCode=ILAS

I know it says for 2001-2007 Escape, but I'm assuming the shop that I'm using is able to use this kit anyway or is ordering the appropriate one direct from the company.

As a closure to this issue (in case anyone cares), for $435 (after taxes) the moonroof was repaired with after market parts that the dealer originally told me did not exist. It runs silky smooth now, and dare I say quieter than the original version! The replacement cam assembly has aluminum hinges - no more cheap plastic crap. After-market was definitely the way to go here.

Now on to the next headache of those :censor: eco-fabric seats.... *sigh*

Thanks for the update. Much appreciated., I'm going to have to look into this. There is a sunroof specialist a few towns over from me that said they could fix it but I never followed up. Think I will...

Thank you very much for this post and the info about TG Automotive. My escape sunroof just recently broke and not wanting to spend the $1,100+ on the dealer repair, I found this info and have confirmed with TG Auto (by emailing them a picture of my broken part) that their kit includes what I need.

Now I will be ordering the kit and hopefully my problems will be recent history!

Glad to know we could help out. :thumb:

Are you replacing the part yourself? If you are, could you take a few photos of the broken part before you fix it and a photo of the new part after it's been put in and post them here? It would be a huge help...

Good luck with the repair :peace:
