Moving from Escape to Explorer

Hi All,

Our 2004 Ford Escape has been pretty much faultless during the two years we have owned it. Sure, there have been some things to fix, but it's a 10+ year old car and they have all been minor and/or cosmetic anyways. The 3.0L V6 is smooth and strong and the vehicle has generally looked after our family well. It has brought my last two children home from hospital after birth and is part of our family.
I do like to do my own regular servicing and maintanence and feel this has helped keep the car in good condition.

But I'm at a crossroad... With three boys in the family now, the Escape is too small. We need to move into a bigger vehicle soon.

I want something that's going to give me what I have with the Escape, just bigger and with seven seats. For those who own or have owned one, what are the Explorers like?

Here in Australia, second hand ones seem to be quite affordable.
What is the best model year and engine combo to look for?

Cheers,
Joe.

We are sorry to see you and your family seem to have outgrown your Escape. Glad to see you are staying in the Ford family.

I don't know about the Explorers do I can not give you any guidance. Perhaps others will weigh in.

Just because you no longer (or soon will no longer) have an Escape doesn't mean you aren't welcome in the City!!! :)P

2 years ago, I moved from 2002 Escape to a 2010 Explorer XLT V6 with 60k miles.

2 years later I love it. No major issues. I moved because I am waiting to get a travel trailer (RV) and wanted something more comfortable to tow with.

Space is good, compared to Escape. Ride is nice. Been on a few good long road trips. No major complaints from me. Miles Per Gallon is roughly around 15 to 17.
Only thing I wish was to spend a bit more for the V8 version since the MPG, I don't think is much different but at the time I did not know.
