what would it take and is it possible to switch the manual climate control to an automatic climate control unit?

Possible? Yes. Worth the effort? probably not.
One thing is garunteed.....it is not as easy as simply swapping the panels. There are other components involved with auto climate control like sunload sensors, temp sensors, often different blower motor, etc. This applies to just about any car as far as manual to auto is concerned. This is why it is usually not worth the effort. It could add up to a fair amount of coin and a lot of work pulling stuff apart and swapping/installing it all. Often times, even if you were willing to go through the effort, there is some gotcha to prevent it like the main vehicle wiring harness not having the appropriate wiring to tie in those new/different components or something. Of course you could always swap stuff like that out as well, but you then are REALLY mounting on the work and effort.

im not looking into changing all that. just curious if it was a simple switch out. but by the sound of it....NO
