RESTRAINT SYSTEM - SAFETY BELT BUCKLE AND
PRETENSIONER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)
B1877 AND/OR B1881

FORD:
2001-2004 Escape

This article supersedes TSB 04-24-4 to update the service procedure.

ISSUE
Some 2001-2004 Escape vehicles may exhibit an intermittent air bag lamp on and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1877 and/or B1881. This may be caused by a variation in the electrical continuity between the pins of the driver and/or passenger side wiring harness and the buckle pretensioner connector. If this condition were to occur, the air bag system remains fully functional.

ACTION
Install a replacement harness connector kit ON BOTH the driver and passenger safety belt buckle pretensioners, even if the DTC is present for only one side. The kit includes improved connector halves to replace the existing connectors on both the body harness and the safety belt buckle pretensioner.

One kit is required per side (2 kits per vehicle). Refer to the instruction sheet included in the kit for complete repair procedure.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) B1877, B1881

Note:
This bulletin supersedes the following TSB(s): 08-001/04. Please update your records accordingly.

BULLETIN NOTE
This bulletin supersedes the previous bulletin 08-001/04, issued on 02/23/04 and 08-001/05 issued on 02/23/05. The REPAIR PROCEDURE, PART(S) and WARRANTY INFORMATION have been revised.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2001-2004 Tribute

DESCRIPTION
Some Tributes may exhibit an airbag lamp illuminated and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1877, B1881 for the SRS pretensioner system.

This may be caused by a variation in the electrical continuity between the body-side connector and the component-side connector containing seat belt buckle and pretensioner wiring.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicles repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ This service bulletin adds supplementary explanation to the instructions enclosed in the service repair kit parts package.
^ This repair procedure is specifically for this Service Bulletin only.
^ The soldering must be performed by skilled technicians who are appointed by the dealer service manager.

NOTE:
Install a replacement harness connector kit on BOTH the driver and passenger seat belt buckle pretensioners, even if the DTC is present for only one side. The kit includes improved connector halves to replace the existing connectors on both the body harness and the safety belt buckle pretensioner. One kit is required per side (2 kits per vehicle). Refer CAREFULLY to the instruction sheet included in the kit for complete repair procedure.

Before performing this repair, review all Workshop Manual safety WARNINGS and NOTES related to diagnosis and repair of the supplemental restraint system (SRS), including those discussed below. If DTCs other than those noted above are observed, consult the Workshop Manual for diagnostic procedures.

1. Confirm the codes using WDS.

2. Record all radio station presets so you can re-program customer preferences after repairs are completed.
WARNING:
^ The seat belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or seat belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
^ To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the air bag backup power supply must be carefully depleted using steps # )3-5 before performing the repairs described in this Service Bulletin.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

4. At the Central Junction Box (CJB), located below the left side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuses # )5 (5A) and # )7 (10A) from the CJB. For additional information, refer to the appropriate model year WSM and Wiring Diagram.

5. Disconnect the battery negative cable and wait one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).

6. Follow the instructions included with the pretensioner repair kits.
CAUTION:
Carefully refer to the "Service Point for Wire Soldering" illustration below and DO NOT allow bad soldering.
NOTE:
Carefully install repair kit for BOTH driver and passenger pretensioner connectors and harness-side connectors, even if DTC is present for only one side.

7. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.

8. Install the RCM fuses # )5 (5A) and # )7 (10A) to the CJB and install the cover.
WARNING:
Be sure that there are no occupants in the vehicle and that there are no objects blocking or sitting in front of any airbag module (including steering wheel, dash panel, seat side bolster and side-curtain airbags) when the battery negative cable is re-connected. Failure to follow this procedure can result in injury or death.

9. Reconnect the battery.

10. If any further problems are noted, perform additional diagnosis after first repeating the power depletion process addressed in steps #)3-5 above.

11. Re-program the recorded preset radio stations.

12. Clear and reset all codes and confirm the repair.

13. Road test the vehicle to relearn KAM (Keep Alive Memory) strategy and verify no DTC's are present.
