DRIVEABILITY - HESITATION ON ACCELERATION
WHEN COLD - VEHICLES PRODUCED BEFORE
3/5/2001 EQUIPPED WITH 3.0L DURATEC ENGINE
ONLY

FORD:
2001 ESCAPE

ISSUE
Some vehicles built before 3/5/2001 equipped with a 3.0L Duratec engine may exhibit a hesitation on cold start drive away only between the ambient temperatures of 10-32°C (50-90 °F). This may be caused by the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

ACTION
Verify condition. If normal diagnostics cannot pinpoint the condition, reprogram the PCM to the latest level calibration. Refer to the following PCM Calibration Information chart.

SERVICE INFORMATION
Use the chart to determine the latest level calibration needed for the vehicle.

Bulletin No: 01-017/02

Last Issued: 05/21/2002

Subject:
HESITATION ON ACCELERATION AFTER COLD START AND DURING WARM UP

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
2001 Tributes with 3.0L V6 engine

DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit hesitation on acceleration immediately after cold start up or during engine warm up between ambient Temperatures of 10-32 degrees C (50-90F). This may be caused by the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module. A revised calibration is now available to repair this concern. Customers having this concern should have their vehicles repaired using the following procedure.

NOTE:
If repair procedures in Service Bulletin 01-014/02 have been performed on this vehicle, then this bulletin is no longer applicable. The repair procedures outlined have already been addressed. Do not continue to the repair procedures.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Information
1. Verify the concern.

2. Determine PCM tear tag level in vehicle (found on white label on gray PCM electrical connector).
^ If the vehicle PCM tear tag # is SJC0, SJC1, or SJC2 (MPC-161 level), then you need to reprogram the PCM only using WDS B17 (or later). Refer to PROCEDURE # 1.
^ If the vehicle PCM tear tag # is JYB2 or JYB3 (MPC-160 level), then the PCM must be replaced to a later level PCM (MPC-161) with a tear tag # of SJC0, SJC1, Or SJC2 (P/N AJ08-18-881F) and use WDS B17 (or later) to perform a special PCM programming procedure. Refer to PROCEDURE # 2.

Procedure # 1
MODULE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH PCM TEAR TAG SJC0, SJC1 OR SJC2

NOTE:
If the WDS PTU is not docked and connected to 115V-120V during this procedure, we recommend that a battery charger be installed on the vehicle battery, turned ON, and set to a maximum charge of no more than 20 AMPS to prevent damage to the WDS PTU.
