ISSUE
Some 3.0L equipped vehicles produced before 7/27/2001 may experience charge lamp illumination, discharged battery or loss of power during extended drives when operating accessories requiring high electrical load (i.e., headlamps, rear window defrost, A/C in max mode) with ambient temperature above 40°C (103 °F). This may be due to the A/C condenser airflow requirements exceeding the low-speed capability of the cooling fans, causing high A/C head pressure, which triggers high-speed fan operation. High-speed engine cooling fan electrical requirement (approximate 56 amps for dual 320W fans) exceeds output capability of electrical charging system.

ACTION
Replace the dual 320 watt cooling fans with dual 220 watt cooling fan assembly (2L8Z-5C607-GA). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Removal of 320 watt fans
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.

2. Loosen the hood latch nut.
NOTE
MARK THE HOOD LATCH POSITION PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF THE BOLTS.

3. Remove the hood latch bolts and position latch aside.

4. If equipped, remove the upper radiator tie strap.

5. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information refer to Section 100-02.

6. Remove the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.

7. Lower the vehicle.

8. Remove the upper center support bolt and the center support.

9. Disconnect the LH Fan electrical connector.

10. Disconnect the cooling fan relay and fan resistor.

11. Remove the LH and RH upper radiator supports.

12. Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.

13. Remove the three bolts and the LH cooling fan.

14. If necessary remove the bolt from the RH fan and disconnect the electrical connector, remove the RH fan.

Installation of 220 watt fans
1. If necessary, install the bolt on the RH fan and connect the electrical connector, install RH fan.

2. Install the three bolts and the LH cooling fan.

3. Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.

4. Install the LH and RH upper radiator supports.

5. Connect the cooling fan relay and the fan resistor.

6. Connect LH fan electrical connector.

7. Install the upper center support bolt and the center support.

8. Raise the vehicle.

9. Install the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.

10. Lower the vehicle.

11. If equipped, install upper radiator tie strap.

12. Position back the hood latch with alignment marks and install the bolts.

13. Tighten the hood latch nut.

14. Verify the hood alignment.

15. Adjust the hood latch.
a. Loosen the bolts.
b. Loosen the nut.
c. Align the hood latch with the hood latch striker.

16. Tighten the hood latch bolts and nut.
CAUTION
MAKE SURE THE HOOD LATCH IS FULLY ENGAGED.

17. Verity the hood latch striker is fully engaging the hood latch. Repeat previous steps as necessary.

18. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
All 2001 Tributes with 3.0L V6 engine.

DESCRIPTION
Some 3.0L V6 equipped vehicles may exhibit charge lamp illumination, discharged battery, or loss of power during extended drives when operating accessories requiring high electrical load (i.e., headlamps, rear window defrost, A/C in MAX mode with ambient temperature above 103 degrees F).

This may be due to A/C condenser airflow requirements exceeding the low-speed capability of the cooling fans. When this occurs, A/C head pressure will rise and trigger high-speed fan operation.

High-speed engine cooling fan electrical requirement is approximately 56 amperes for dual 320W cooling fans. This exceeds output capability of electrical charging system.

Refer to the following procedure for replacing the dual 320W cooling fan assembly with dual 220W cooling fan assembly.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
320 Watt Fan Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (section 01-17 BATTERY DISCONNECT).

2. Mark the mounted position of the hood latch bracket.

3. Loosen the hood latch nut.

4. Remove the hood latch bolts and position the hood latch assembly aside.

5. If equipped, remove the upper radiator tie strap.

6. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (section 00-00 LIFTING).

7. Remove the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.

8. Lower the vehicle.

9. Remove the upper center support bolt and the center support.

10. Disconnect the LH fan electrical connector.

11. Disconnect the cooling fan relay and fan resistor.

12. Remove the LH and RH upper radiator support.

13. Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.

14. Remove the three bolts and the LH cooling fan.

15. If necessary, remove the bolt from the RH fan and disconnect the electrical connector.

220 Watt Fan Installation
1. If necessary, install the bolt on the RH fan and connect the electrical connector.

2. Install the RH fan.

3. Install the three bolts and the LH cooling fan.

4. Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.

5. Install the LH and RH upper radiator supports.

6. Connect the cooling fan relay and the fan resistor.

7. Connect the LH fan electrical connector.

8. Install the upper center support bolt and the center support.

9. Raise the vehicle.

10. Install the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.

11. Lower the vehicle.

12. If equipped, install upper radiator tie strap.

13. Position the hood latch using the previous alignment marks and install the bolts.

14. Tighten the hood latch nut.

15. Verify the hood alignment.

16. Adjust the hood latch:
a. Loosen the bolts.
b. Loosen the nut.
c. Align the hood latch with the hood latch striker.
d. Tighten the hood latch bolts and nut.
