3.0L ENGINE MIL ON WITH DTCS P0351 THROUGH
P0356 - MULTIPLE COIL PRIMARY CIRCUIT

FORD:
2005-2006 Escape

MERCURY:
2005-2006 Mariner

This article supersedes TSB 05-11-1 to update the Service Procedure and Part List.

ISSUE
Some 2005-2006 Escape/Mariner vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine, may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with two or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for coil on plug (COP) primary circuit faults (P0351 through P0356). This may be due to the spark plugs causing RF interference with the powertrain control module (PCM), resulting in damage to the PCM and COPs.

ACTION
Refer to the following Service Procedure to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Connect the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool to the data link connector (DLC). Identify the vehicle and perform a key on engine running (KOER) test.
    • If only one (1) coil circuit primary DTC (P035x) is present, follow Procedure A.[/*]
    • If there are two (2) or more coil circuit primary DTCs (P035x-P035x), follow Procedure B.[/*]
    [/*]
Procedure A
  1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code (Figure 1). If the date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs.

    [/*]
  2. Continue with normal Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) diagnostics for the DTC.[/*]
Procedure B
  1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code (Figure 1). If the date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs.

    [/*]
  2. Replace all six (6) COPs.

    [/*]
  3. Check PCM internal coil driver functionality by running the Oscilloscope Escape PCM Driver Test available on IDS version B58 or later.

    [/*]
  4. Using IDS select
    • Toolbox.[/*]
    • Oscilloscope tools.[/*]
    • Escape PCM Driver Test - follow on screen instructions.[/*]
    NOTE
THE OSCILLOSCOPE TEST TO CHECK PCM INTERNAL COIL DRIVER FUNCTIONALITY MUST BE PERFORMED PRIOR TO REPLACING THE PCM.

    [/*]
  5. Replace PCM only if coil driver functionality fails in the oscilloscope test.

    [/*]
  6. Program the passive anti-theft system (PATS) keys if PCM is replaced.

    [/*]
  7. If the procedure has not corrected the condition, follow normal PC/ED diagnostics for DTC.[/*]

2005 TRIBUTE - MIL ON WITH MULTIPLE COIL PRIMARY CIRCUIT DTCS
P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354, P0355, P0356 (3.0L ENGINE)

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2005 Tribute 3.0L Engine Only

DESCRIPTION
Some 2005 Tributes with a 3.0L engine, may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) ON with two or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for coil-on-plug (COP) primary circuit faults (P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354, P0355, P0356). This may be due to the spark plugs causing RF interference with the PCM, resulting in damage to the PCM and COPs.

It may be necessary to replace the PCM, COPs and install new level spark plugs.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify concern

2. Perform Key On Engine Running (KOER) test.
- If there is only one (1) coil circuit primary DTC (P035x), proceed to PROCEDURE"A".
- If there are two (2) or more coil circuit primary DTCs (P035x-P035x), proceed to PROCEDURE"B".

PROCEDURE "A"
1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code.
a. If a date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs.
b. Continue with normal troubleshooting for the DTC.

PROCEDURE "B"
1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code.
- If a date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs.

2. Replace all six (6) COPs.

3. Replace PCM according to the Workshop Manual (section 01-40 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM), Removal and Installation).

4. Verify repair.
