Last Issued: 06/23/2008

Subject:
NO START/LOSS OF ENGINE TIMING/SCRAPING NOISE AT CRANKSHAFT PULLEY - POSSIBLE ENGINE DAMAGE

BULLETIN NOTE:
This bulletin supersedes the previous bulletin 01-013/07, issued on 04/05/07. The APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/ VINS, REPAIR PROCEDURE, PART(S) and WARRANTY INFORMATION have been revised.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2005 - 2007 B-Series 2.3L
2005 - 2006 Tribute 2.3L
2006 - 2008 MAZDA6 2.3L vehicles built before Nov. 11, 2007
(Service Bulletin is not applicable to MAZDASPEED6)

DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles equipped with a 2.3L engine may exhibit no start, loss of engine timing, or scraping noise at the crankshaft pulley. This may be caused by a damaged crankshaft pulley. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
CAUTION:
These engines may experience engine damage if the crankshaft pulley bolt is loosened during service without first installing the service tools per the Workshop Manual procedure. The crankshaft pulley bolt also retains the crankshaft cam drive sprocket which is not keyed to the crankshaft, so valve timing may shift if the crankshaft pulley bolt is loosened. If this occurs, pistons may contact and damage the valves. Damage to an engine caused by not following proper Workshop Manual procedure may result in denial of warranty claims or back charges.

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Inspect the crankshaft pulley for rubber protruding from the pulley, loose pulse wheel, or bent tabs on pulse wheel touching engine front cover.

3. If necessary, replace crankshaft pulley and bolt according to Workshop Manual (section 01-10 MECHANICAL - 2.3L: CRANKSHAFT PULLEY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
NOTE:
The crankshaft pulley bolt cannot be re-used, it must be replaced.

4. Verify repair.
