ENGINE NOISE - GRINDING/RATTLE MOST
NOTICEABLE AT IDLE - VEHICLES BUILT FROM
4/27/2007-4/30/2007.

FORD:
2008 Escape

MERCURY:
2008 Mariner

ISSUE
Some 2008 Escape and Mariner vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine, may exhibit a grinding or rattling noise with the engine running, more noticeable at idle.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check the vehicle build date:
a. If the vehicle was built from 4/27/2007-4/30/2007, go to Step 2.
b. If not, follow normal diagnostics using Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04.

2. Remove the starter, Refer to WSM, Section 303-06.
a. Inspect the starter drive for loose washers and/or the snap ring not seated in the shafi groove. Replace as necessary.

3. Install the starter, Refer to WSM, Section 303-06.

2008 TRIBUTE 3.0L - ENGINE GRINDING/RATTLING NOISE AT IDLE

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2008 Tribute 3.0L

DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a grinding or rattling noise while the engine is running. The noise is most noticeable at idle.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.

2. Verify vehicle build date.

3. Record customer's preset radio stations.

4. Remove starter according to Workshop Manual (section 01-19 STARTER MOTOR - 3.0L REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION).

5. Inspect starter drive for loose washers and/or snap ring not seated in shaft groove. If found, replace starter according to Workshop Manual (section 01-19 STARTER MOTOR - 3.0L REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION).

6. Re-enter customer's preset radio stations.

7. Verify repair.
