ECVT TRANSAXLE - HIGH PITCH SINGLE TONE
ELECTRICAL NOISE

FORD:
2008 Escape Hybrid

MERCURY:
2008 Mariner Hybrid

ISSUE
Some 2008 Escape and Mariner Hybrid vehicles equipped with electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) transaxle may exhibit a high pitch single tone electrical noise from the transaxle. The noise is most noticeable during the following conditions:
  • Wide Open Throttle (WOT) acceleration from a stop approximately 14-31 MPH (22-50 Km/h)[/*]
  • Steady state tip-in while driving at approximately 35-40 MPH (56-64 Km/h)[/*]
  • Braking from approximately 54-46 MPH (87-74 Km/h)[/*]
ACTION
Follow Service Procedure steps to correct condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Inspect the transaxle for threaded bosses to install a noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) shield (Figure 6). If threaded bosses are present on the transaxle follow both Procedure A and B. If threaded bosses (Figure 6) are not present perform only Procedure B.

Procedure A
  1. Disable the vehicle high voltage electrical system following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 414-03.

    [/*]
  2. Remove the wiring harness retainer and selector lever cable from the studs. (Figure 1)

    [/*]
  3. Remove the stud bold from the high voltage transaxle harness. (Figure 2)

    [/*]
  4. Disconnect the high voltage transaxle electrical connector. (Figure 2)

    [/*]
  5. Remove the transaxle vent from the high voltage electrical connector bracket and position aside. (Figure 3).

    [/*]
  6. Remove the two (2) transaxle harness electrical connector bracket bolts. (Figure 4)

    [/*]
  7. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01B, for removal of rear transaxle insulator and retainer on early build vehicles. If the mount is a late build mount as displayed in WSM, Section 307-01B, skip to Step 8.

    [/*]
  8. Late build vehicles only require removing the rear insulator bracket. Remove the insulator through bolt and three (3) bracket bolts. (Figure 5)

    [/*]
  9. Install two (2) lower NVH shield studs into the transaxle bosses and tighten to 80 lb-in (9 N.m). (Figure 6)

    [/*]
  10. Install the NVH shield and two (2) lower stud nuts on lower NVH shield studs. Tighten the nuts to 80 lb-in (9 N.m). (Figure 6)

    [/*]
  11. Install the upper NVH shield stud and tighten to 80 lb-in (9 N.m). (Figure 6)

    [/*]
  12. Skip to Step 13 for late build vehicles. For early built vehicles, follow WSM, Section 307-01B, instructions to install the rear-transaxle insulator and retainer.

    [/*]
  13. For late build vehicles install rear transaxle insulator bracket and through bolt. Torque the three (3) bracket bolts to 18 lb-ft (25 N.m). Torque the insulator through bolt to 66 lb-ft (90 N.m). (Figure 5)

    [/*]
  14. Install the transaxle harness electrical connector bracket and torque the two (2) bolts to 80 lb-in (9 N.m). (Figure 4)

    [/*]
  15. Attach the transaxle vent to the transaxle harness electrical connector bracket. (Figure 3)

    [/*]
  16. Install the transaxle high voltage electrical connector and stud bolt, tighten to 89 lb.in (10 N.m) (Figure 2)

    [/*]
  17. Attach the selector lever cable and wiring harness retainers to studs. (Figure 1)

    [/*]
  18. Enable the vehicle high voltage electrical system following WSM, Section 414-03.[/*]
Procedure B
Reprogram the Transmission control module to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 57.9 and higher with patch 13. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.9 DVD. Calibration and IDS patch files may also be obtained at the website.
