2010 Axle Seal leak

So I thought I would be lucky. I thought I would be safe from having to worry about leaks, transmission problems, shaft seals etc. Nope. Brought the Escape in for its' first 5k oil change. They noted a leak in the right front axle seal. They said I needed to make an appointment and have it done during the day as they do warranty repairs during the day shift (I was there at 6pm).

So while they were printing up everything I talked to the service desk guy. I said that I paid $27,000 for a vehicle that needs a seal replaced in less than 3 months. I said I work all day, just you you, and I don't have time to bring it back and sit in the lounge for 3 hours "during the day". I said I would like a loaner for the day and they can work on it tomorrow. I basically said I don't want to drive a vehicle that is leaking. Period. he said it was not leaking that bad and I could schedule something. I re-iterated that the vehicle was less than 3 months old and I was not going to drive it until it was fixed.

he said Ford does not provide a rental unit for this type of repair. I said fine then Tasca (dealer) can step up to the plate and provide me with one. They have an enterprise rent-a-car inside the dealership. he said that he couldn't but "Bruce" the parts/Service Director could do something. I walked into his office and informed him that I had a less than 3 month old car leaking fluid from the transfer case/axle seal. he looked at it and agreed that I should not have to come back and sit and wait for it. he provided me with a car for free, put down that the truck gets done tomorrow by the best tech and to talk to him on the deal.

So at least I got to leave the vehicle there for the fix and pick it back up tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about the whole leaking thing, but at least it is getting fixed now. What a bummer.

I have a 5 month old 2009 Escape 4 cylinder and the axle seal started leaking. This then began a chain of events that are as follows:
Engine started bucking, no engine light went on
Engine would not shift from 1st to 2nd smoothly- although it is automatic transmission
front driver side axle needed to be completely replaced due to axle seal leaking
took car in and 2 WEEKS LATER, THEY CANNOT FIND THE BUSHING NEEDED TO DO THE REPLACEMENT

they will not pay for a rental and they do not have a loaner system at this dealership. the car is on the lift, no front tires and the engine is in pieces.

I received confirmation dealership this is a wide spread issue and the parts are hard to come by since they are in the midst of a 'remodel'.

I will never get another ford and if anyone buys this car, good luck!
What do you mean, they can't find the bushing? Which bushing or a new one? All the numbers and pictures are in TSB 10-01-05!!
Maybe his dealer ment they were having a hard time acquiring the replacement parts due to the high volume of axle leaks currently being experienced by Fords new 6F35 6spd transmisison?

At least that dealer didn't just patch up the vehicle and give it back to the owner unfixed.
This same problem is occurring in my '09 and it is a headache. Especially Ford's policy of not having courtesy vehicles. Our seals were replaced and it did not solve the problem. I suspect that there must be some thing scarred up in the transfer case and so the seal/bushing isn't seating properly. Will have to see what Ford says when I bring it in.
This thread is making me slightly nervous. Next Tuesday will mark the one year anniversary of ownership (and nearly 15,000 miles of driving. nuts.) and I'm wondering if I need to start looking for this leakage business.
Well this is day 2 for me and my car is still in the shop for the same problem. They did rent me a car yesterday. Better be ready today or i will flip out on them!!

I think that everyone that owns a newer Escape owes it to themselves to check OFTEN. I do now about once a week. I shine the flashlight from under the hood downward and from under the car upward. So far knock on wood no other leaks. I don't have any bucking, hesitation, mis-shifts or anything else like that pertaining to the transmission. I also chek the oil and tranny fluid regularly to keep an eye on things. Same deal - I check the dip sticks and look for any leaks underneath.
Hey guys, First post here. My wife has a 09 Escape XLT 2.5L. Noticed oil marks in the garage, sure enough axel seal leak. The dealer her in MI has had the vehicle for 2 weeks to the day!! they cannot get the parts (axle and bearing) they have the case but not the other 2 pieces because they have been back ordered. Checked NHTSA.gov tonight, this TSB is not listed? anyone have a copy?
I cant believe this car has been in for 2 weeks the service tech said hes got 6 of them waiting now. Originally he got a ship date of 2/17 which didn't ship. Now they are telling him they are going to start pulling parts from the production line to get out. How is this not a recall? they told me my axle was moving 1/2 inch and it was not safe to drive.
Good part is they will provide me with a rental free of charge, had one for 2 days but turned it in. luckily i have a fusion my wife can drive, otherwise id be driving the rental foci and she would be driving my mustang.
the car was purchased last april, she drives a lot, it has 17000 miles on it. We traded in her 07 vue hybrid that was a problem child to get something she wouldn't have to worry about crapping out on her. Shouldnt have gotten a 1st year production i guess.

Where in MI are you? There doesn't seem to be a option for posting attachments or I'd post one for that TSB.
I live in Farmington.....I go to suburban ford in Waterford, they have always taken good car of me.
I found the TSB through the post on ford forums thanks
I had read this thread and didn't want to have to post on it, but last week I decided I better take a look to make sure my Escape wasn't leaking.. so I took a look underneath when I got home from work last Thursday and sure enough there were spots on the garage floor and a pink/red drip hanging off the bottom of my vehicle. Took it to the dealer Monday, they got the part and were fixing it and realized another seal wasn't looking so good so they are going to replace that too, hopefully I'll have it back by the end of the week.

I was going to have them work on that "hoot" noise at the same time but I decided to let that wait..

..and of course this happens while the worst snowstorm the northeast (where I am anyways) has seen all season is coming into town.

Didn't bother going through the crap for a loaner car, just using the 07 Escape at the moment, but the contis suck in the snow even with AWD, nothing like my Blizzak DV-1's + AWK + traction control! :(

Interesting to note that the 07 has never been in the shop, 3 years and 40,000mi. no problems.
The 07 hybrid we had didn't have any issues either.

Oh well, at least it's under warranty. But being 4 months old and only having 3500mi. on it I'm not happy but what are you gonna do?

I'll update in a few days..

My dealership is running a 99-cent oil change special, I'm 500 miles shy of 15,000 miles, and I have a $10 service coupon that I was planning on using for my 15K-mile service. I think it's time to check the axle seals. Harder when you have to store/park the car in a dirty parking ramp (only three more months of school!). At least now I know about what colors to look for.
Crap! Now I need to look out for this? :cuss: :wall:
I thought my leak was power steering fluid because it was brown/black (dark) not pink/red. When I took it in the the dealer I told them I thought it was PS fluid which i was told the steering is electric which explains why I couldnt find the master cyl to ck the fluid level (no longer hydraulic). The service tech told me the ATF fluid is a synthetic blend now and no longer reddish.

The red color is a dye that was added to the ATF.
Found a spot on my garage floor this morning... I guess it was only a matter of time... christ I only have 6500km on the escape! Time to call the dealer...

Wonderfull...

Pat
seems to be a epademic now!! Mine was fixed.
I look once a week or so for drips or anything. Checked tonight and knock on wood there is nothing I can see.

Not really true! It starts off pink in color and some say a somewhat darkening in color is still okay as long as it doesn't smell burnt. Mine was still pink the last time I checked it but I don't have that many miles on mine.
i have 30 k and it looks dirty already?
I dont know much about the new ATF. Service tech told me its not pink anymore. Mine is definitely not pink. weve only got 17000 (a lot for 10 months) but low compared to the life of tranny fluid.

Im gonna find out more about it if we ever get the car back.

our leak was funny also, we have a gate across our driveway (for the dog) wife has masters classes couple times a week, gets home late, gets out opens gate pulls in garage. I noticed spots in the driveway thinking that cannot be either one of our cars and didnt think anything of it. forgot about it for about a MONTH! then one day she told me there was a stream of oil leading to her car across the driveway. Thats when I looked. This thing leaked for a good month, but only left small spots in the garage, bigger spots on the driveway where she would stop to open th gate and 1 long streak, didnt seem to be a steady leak.
f*ck...

I take possession tomorrow at 3pm... after reading this thread I am having second thoughts!!
