2010 Axle Seal leak

So I thought I would be lucky. I thought I would be safe from having to worry about leaks, transmission problems, shaft seals etc. Nope. Brought the Escape in for its' first 5k oil change. They noted a leak in the right front axle seal. They said I needed to make an appointment and have it done during the day as they do warranty repairs during the day shift (I was there at 6pm).

So while they were printing up everything I talked to the service desk guy. I said that I paid $27,000 for a vehicle that needs a seal replaced in less than 3 months. I said I work all day, just you you, and I don't have time to bring it back and sit in the lounge for 3 hours "during the day". I said I would like a loaner for the day and they can work on it tomorrow. I basically said I don't want to drive a vehicle that is leaking. Period. he said it was not leaking that bad and I could schedule something. I re-iterated that the vehicle was less than 3 months old and I was not going to drive it until it was fixed.

he said Ford does not provide a rental unit for this type of repair. I said fine then Tasca (dealer) can step up to the plate and provide me with one. They have an enterprise rent-a-car inside the dealership. he said that he couldn't but "Bruce" the parts/Service Director could do something. I walked into his office and informed him that I had a less than 3 month old car leaking fluid from the transfer case/axle seal. he looked at it and agreed that I should not have to come back and sit and wait for it. he provided me with a car for free, put down that the truck gets done tomorrow by the best tech and to talk to him on the deal.

So at least I got to leave the vehicle there for the fix and pick it back up tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about the whole leaking thing, but at least it is getting fixed now. What a bummer.

After 3 trips to the dealer it turns out I DO have an axle seal leak and they have to special order a tool to fix it.. In for the 4th time in 3 weeks next week... :censor:
If that's the seal installation tool that they are refering to? This came in the '09MY when the problem first started and dealers were saying that they needed a special tool also. Turns out that this is the same tool that's been used for several years back then on a seal in another Ford product.
So I had this problem last year, took them almost 3 months to fix it (Thank God I purchased the extended warranty from the dealership as it provided me with a rental....where Ford wouldnt.... :wall: :bang: )

So now almost a year later I was pulling up to my normal parking spot by my house and I noticed a puddle..... and upon further inspection it seems my lil Tatsu has sprung a leak. Took it to Ford and it turns out the transmission is leaking....AGAIN....almost hit 30k miles and it looks like they have to fix the transmission again. Seems Im one of the unlucky few that got a lemon transmission :bang:

I had a transmission leak but it wasn't the typical left hand half shaft leak. It took two visits, one for the leak and another to find what they made leak. All in all about 1 1/2 weeks total.
In again this morning for the same seal leak and a new water leak in my passenger compartment. seems water drips down the passenger grab rail in the rain now... I am starting to get a little upset with my Escape. It is now not even 2 years old and has been in the shop more than my last 3 Dodges combined!
So got a call from the dealership on Friday. They checked all the parts and replaced the seal, check the bushings and the boot seal and did not find any abnormalities. So they put it back together and did a test drive only to find it leaking again. So they called a Ford engineer in to solve the issue and it turns out that the bearings for the front diff were not seating correctly and were in fact shifting whenever I made a turn and that was what was causing the leak. He said the bearings themselves looked fine and after some deliberation the ford tech at the dealership got authorization for a brand new transmission! :D

I know some people have told me that for any car to have to replace the transmission so soon is bad and that alone should make me NOT want to buy another Ford. Am I crazy to not let this deter me from buying another Ford?
My family has owned a Ford as far back as I can remember and this was the first time Ive EVER had issues with my vehicle.

If I'm completely honest, if history were any indication of anything, Ford's forte do not include transmissions and engines. That's General Motors. In terms of durability and strength, however...

I have a co-worker who bought a Lincoln Navigator because a Escalade isn't able to tow his 9,000lb boat. How's that for cold, hard facts?

Every time this thing is due for service it seems as though $500+ of warranty work goes with it.

- Steering Shaft
- Axle Seal
- Parking Brake cable and release (and a new brake drum)
- transmission reflash
- transmission rebuild
- adjust tailgate (twice) then to body shop for new hinges
- replace rear wiper motor

at 48,000km I am TERRIFIED to own this car out of warranty. I almost wish I could say I have a lemon except for the fact that I actually seem to have FEWER problems than some others on this board. I now have grinding steering again (which the steering shaft was supposed to fix) as well as erratic shifting in the tranny again (only 4,000km since the rebuild).

Remind me why I didn't buy a CRV again? Or will someone convince me to NOT stop at the Honda dealer on the way home and trade this piece of American s**t for something reliable (aka Japanese)?

Well I am off to the dealer again this morning..
  • I opened the rear hatch this morning to find Lake Escape in the back
Engine oil leak behind timing cover
    irratic tranny shifting when cold
    water leak @ grab rail

I have to tell you.. I'm not sure I even want it back..
Apparently the Sirius antenna leaking is very common on the F150 and the Escape.. everyone keep an eye open.

Strange. I rarely have passengers so I wonder what a good way to detect this on a solo-basis is...

Where's this Lake Escape business that everyone's finding in the rear??

kmoose & Onefastbike,

Because you live north of the border, I highly recommend calling the Ford of Canada Customer Relationship Center @ 1-800-565-3673 to speak with a live agent and explain what you're experiencing.

That's great news, Katscan! You're a bit more north (and way east too! ;)) of the border, so I suggest speaking with Ford of Germany @ +49 (0) 221 903 3333 for future help with this.

Thanks for the advice. I'm currently on hold with them. We'll see what they have to say :)
14min on hold.. but got a very nice CSR. She "escilated" my call to the regional service manager..

I think my biggest thing is I have lost confidence in what had been my dream car. A car with only 38000kms should only ever see the shop for oil changes.

I don't really want this truck any more.. but if I try and sell it I'm gonna take a bath.

That sounds great, Onefastbike. Keep us in the loop with the progress. :)

I have an 09 scape XLT, I've had it 2 months or 5,000 kms.

Last week noticed a drop on the driveway.... Well I'm sitting at the mechanics having my axle seal replaced.
Seems this is a recurring problem... If more issues continue after this ill be using my extended warranty to its fullest.

I traded in my Pontiac sunfire for an escape....I had an extended warranty on my Pontiac and never used it. My Pontiac was very good to me... I needed a bigger car/truck... And hello problems!

So we'll see if I get more problems after this initial repair...

A common problem from '09MY-'11MY but haven't heard of any '12MY having the same issue.
Hey, if you have knocking in the front end, feels like suspension knock, rappid clicking etc. it is most likely your front stabilizer bars. Common problem, easy to replace less than 2 hrs. both bars will be less than $100.00. NAPA sells a lifetime warranty bar for $49.00 in Canada. You can find a sample video on how to replace on U-tube.

2007 Ford Escape leak also:
Have an axle seal leak and a PTU leak dealership quoted me $1,040.00 plus tax to fix - they offer a two year unlimited warranty on the parts they install. My situation is do I fix it or not? It has over 250,000 kms owned it since .7 km and it has been very reliable these last eight plus years - always hand washed paint has virtually zero scratches so it looks new. Last summer, found a mint leather interior which I installed.

Do not like the new Ford Escape but been leaning towards the Jeep Compass 4x4 looks nice but making monthly payments is something I would like to avoid. On the other hand the new Jeep will have the 5 year 100km and 3 year 60k warranty so if something goes wrong it would be covered. With, the Escape I am the warranty - I could spend the money to fix but what if the transmission dies suddenly or alternator/starter fails? Everyone who has owned a vehicle has faced these same questions.

<sigh>
