Hello there!

I am new to this forum and I drive a 2011 Ford Escape. It has been a great vehicle for me, but I am not the most technical with cars. I get oil changes and I get the tires rotated but that is about it. It has 180,000 miles on it, and most parts are still original.

So here is what I have noticed that is worrying me.

Part 1: When I am going down my hill to my house, I have noticed that there is a small squeak that increases in frequency the fast I go down the hill. It is as if it goes with the rotation of tires. I only noticed it on the Driver's side, not the passenger's.

Part 2: As I go faster and faster, I hear this roaring/rotating sound. It also goes along with the rotation of the tires. Could it be the bearings? I have noticed the vehicle has performed slightly worse and my Miles Per Gallon have dropped a little bit.

Any advice would be helpful, thank you all, god bless.

Welcome to the city PolarNights.

sounds like you could have a rock stuck in between your brake rotor and dust shield… Or your 'early wear' indicator is making contact with the rotor.

if it is the early wear indicator on the brake pad, and the other side looks fine… You need to do a full bleed of your brake system.

The roaring sound you are hearing is likely your front wheel bearings, generally recommended to replace the hub and bearing as a set. If money is tight just do the one side, but I recommend doing both.

Thank you for the response Mountain Escape. I am planning on taking it into a shop soon for new tires soon, so I will let them inspect it while there. If I may ask you though, what does a "Full Bleed" mean? Like, replace both sides of brake pads? Thanks.

Good question. You are looking at both passenger and driver sides of the brake pads for even wear.

A brake inspection should be free when doing tire work.

sometimes the early wear indicator on the pad can get bent on one side when doing tire work(why are you are only hearing it on the driver side)

You will only need to perform a brake bleed if one side's pad is wearing, and the other side looks new. Caliper inspection will also be vital at that point.

have a good night, it is polar where I live… Below freezing most nights ( :

As long as your brakes are stopping your car, and it is not pulling to one side really crazy…

The only thing I would be concerned with is getting the wheel bearings replaced.

get a couple of quotes, make sure your quotes are apples to apples. I again recommend full hub and bearing replacement…
Don't let someone tell you that just pressing/replacing the bearings is cheaper... it is not in the long run.
