I am having a horrible time trying to use Android Auto. Not sure if it is my phone (Motorola Edge+)
I have read that some cars with multiple USB ports only have one enabled for AA.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Any of the USB ports should function. Some of the older ones (pre AA support) would disable the internal console one when an update was applied.

I struggled with Android Auto early on with my 2017 Escape and SYNC3 (3.0 not 3.4), but an early SYNC update and a better USB cable it just worked. I use all sorts of crazy USB cables now and no real problem, other than CarPlay works better so I use an old iPhone instead. I used to use a Google Nexus 6P, and current a Galaxy S7 (and an iPhone 6S).

I have tried a Type C to Lightning in my parents 2020 Explorer and it worked fine.
