I am wondering if I could add auxiliary controls like the steering wheel on my 08 Mariner. I have the 2 piece 6 disc radio but do not have steering wheel controls. I would like to add additional controls for the radio somewhere maybe the console or door panel. Is there a plug in harness I can get so I can add this? Is the switch input just a - or + or something special.
I want to add other options to my mariner as time passes.

Thanks

I'll post the diagrams for the switches tomorrow. Basically, Ford uses one voltage-sensitive line to control all audio functions, with different resistors on each switch.

Thanks, Tim! You just made my day!

PS: If you don't find those control wires on the 24-pin head unit connector, you can buy one of those connectors on eBay, remove two of the pins from it, and push them into the factory connector.

What would I need to do this? I know in my Chevy HHR, there is a plug in the wheel to do this and the part is cheap..(although mine came with it..)
Is there a similar plug in the wheel of my 08 XLT? About how much is the part for this? I have another unrelated question regarding the Satellite radio feature.. Why can't you set the radio to display the channel/artist by default? Every time you change the station you need to press "TEXT" to set that mode... just curious..

And JPark, just want to complement your posts. They are very informative and I will be referring to them often!

Thanks!

First, if your Escape has the cruise controls on the left but no audio controls on the right, you'd need to buy another steering wheel and the audio control switches. The steering wheel is about $200, depending on the color. The service DVDs don't document whether the wiring is already installed, but you can verify that by looking at the 24-pin connector on the back of the head unit. If you see the GRAY with YELLOW STRIPE wire at Pin 18 and the BLUE with WHITE STRIPE wire at Pin 19, then you already have the wiring. If you don't have the wiring, you'll need to buy a different harness, and possibly a different clockspring.

I have the same complaint about the Sirius display on my Edge's nav unit, too. From what I've read in other forums, there's nothing that can be done about it. It's just the way that Pioneer designed the system. I don't switch Sirius channels that much, though, so I just live with it.

I'll get the part numbers for the steering wheels and switches this afternoon. I don't have the service DVD here. And I e-mailed Cablevision about what appears to be a DNS problem on their end.

Thanks!

It frustrates me with the sirius thing.. Also I think the clock button and the text button could have been swapped.. You hardly ever need the clock button, but I hit the text button every time now.. :cuss:

Anywho.. I don't know that pulling the steering wheel (and spending $200) would be worth it.. it's one of those live with it situations.

As far as Cablevision, I checked before I came to work and still no good.. I will call them tomorrow as well. I reset my cable modem and linksys router but no love. I did an nslookup from a website to get the ip address and tried to do a tracert but it didn't get very far. I had some of my posts set to email me and saw the emails but couldn't get to the site! :wall:

Thanks to all for the great site.. :thumb: ( I wonder what the other site is (the site we dare not speak..)

BTW, the steering wheel from an Edge or Fusion should fit on an '08+ Escape. Most of those have both cruise and audio controls, but with green lighting. You could keep your current airbag.

Just a tip in case you want to try to find a steering wheel in a wrecking yard or on eBay...

what exactly is a new clockspring? i found a steering wheel to match my escapes interior that has the cruise and the audio buttons. what is the extent to changin these out? and if i get an after market radio...will these audio controls still work? when i pull my radio to hook up my sirius module im gonna check and see if i have those wires. if not...how hard will it be to install this steering wheel and it work?

not hard if your new radio has a steering wheel input. most good radios do. i have honestly never replaced a steering wheel that had airbags though so I wouldnt know how hard that is... but if its a ford steering wheel, im pretty sure the connection harnesses should be the same. if not, you can look at wiring diagrams and see which wires match up where. be careful not to set off the airbag =) take out that fuse until your 100% sure its done and finished right.
