Adding aux controls like the steering wheel?

7797 Views 21 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  drescape08
I am wondering if I could add auxiliary controls like the steering wheel on my 08 Mariner. I have the 2 piece 6 disc radio but do not have steering wheel controls. I would like to add additional controls for the radio somewhere maybe the console or door panel. Is there a plug in harness I can get so I can add this? Is the switch input just a - or + or something special.
I want to add other options to my mariner as time passes.

Thanks

Tim

I'll post the diagrams for the switches tomorrow. Basically, Ford uses one voltage-sensitive line to control all audio functions, with different resistors on each switch.

You can find the two control wires (GRAY with YELLOW STRIPE on Pin 18 and BLUE with WHITE STRIPE on Pin 19) on the back of the 24-pin head unit connector. viewtopic.php?f=27&t=589

I don't know why the resistor values aren't documented on the Escape controls, but they use the same control buttons and values as the Edge, so here's the control diagram from a 2008 Edge:

Thanks, Tim! You just made my day!

PS: If you don't find those control wires on the 24-pin head unit connector, you can buy one of those connectors on eBay, remove two of the pins from it, and push them into the factory connector.

If I order the switch at the dealer does it come with the resistors?

It sure does!

What would I need to do this? I know in my Chevy HHR, there is a plug in the wheel to do this and the part is cheap..(although mine came with it..)
Is there a similar plug in the wheel of my 08 XLT? About how much is the part for this? I have another unrelated question regarding the Satellite radio feature.. Why can't you set the radio to display the channel/artist by default? Every time you change the station you need to press "TEXT" to set that mode... just curious..

And JPark, just want to complement your posts. They are very informative and I will be referring to them often!

Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad to help!

First, if your Escape has the cruise controls on the left but no audio controls on the right, you'd need to buy another steering wheel and the audio control switches. The steering wheel is about $200, depending on the color. The service DVDs don't document whether the wiring is already installed, but you can verify that by looking at the 24-pin connector on the back of the head unit. If you see the GRAY with YELLOW STRIPE wire at Pin 18 and the BLUE with WHITE STRIPE wire at Pin 19, then you already have the wiring. If you don't have the wiring, you'll need to buy a different harness, and possibly a different clockspring.

I have the same complaint about the Sirius display on my Edge's nav unit, too. From what I've read in other forums, there's nothing that can be done about it. It's just the way that Pioneer designed the system. I don't switch Sirius channels that much, though, so I just live with it.

I'll get the part numbers for the steering wheels and switches this afternoon. I don't have the service DVD here. And I e-mailed Cablevision about what appears to be a DNS problem on their end.

BTW, the steering wheel from an Edge or Fusion should fit on an '08+ Escape. Most of those have both cruise and audio controls, but with green lighting. You could keep your current airbag.

Just a tip in case you want to try to find a steering wheel in a wrecking yard or on eBay...
