General guideline is ten years for properly cared-for tires, five years for tires with questionable history. Some tires will age badly and become dangerous before those guidelines, like my stock General Ameritracs. You will notice a sharp decline in wet performance as the rubber degrades. If properly cared for, tires in storage age at nearly the same rate as tires in service. Keep the tires away from sunlight and ozone (electric motors, fluorescent lighting) and store them deflated to reduce air migration through the rubber.

If you do a ton of mileage and wear out tires in two or three years, it wouldn't hurt to ask for a discount and do the shop a favour by taking some of their older tires.

This really applies to the trailer tire industry. Trailer tires are probably the most neglected tires on the roads.

That article is very good though as it can inform others of potential hazards of tires.
