Right now I don't have it engaged but when I do have it engaged, it will give me a warning on the dash and in order to go, I have to put the car in park and shut it off and then restart the car. This happens every time if I have it turned on. Anyone else experienced this? I've only owned my Escape since last November.

That is weird. Usually if it is the battery it will permanently disable auto stop/start. That is what my 2017 SE with the 1.5 did. The A with a slash was always in the display, and it wouldn't stop it. My battery was down to 250 CCA. I also couldn't sit in accessory mode with the radio on, it would turn off after a few seconds.

I replaced the battery and reset the BMS and auto start/stop re-enabled and works as it used to. While I generally drive in Sport mode which disabled auto stop/start, my wife doesn't and she thinks that auto stop/start is great and saves us hundreds in gas a month...

Could it be the battery?
Yes, You can have your battery load tested for free at your local auto parts store. All you will have to do is pull up in front, and ask politely ( :
Based on what you said in the other post about draining the battery completely down, I would do this test first.

you need to have it 'load tested'

More likely than not, yes you need a new 12v battery. Best to start with a full scan of the vehicle for DTCs. The vehicle's computers will tell you why it disabled the start/stop feature. If the battery is over 3yro, it's about time for a new battery.

Start/stop batteries are a little different from regular batteries. If the battery has indeed failed, replace it with the correct one, designed for start/stop. The correct battery will cost more, but will save you money in the end.

maybe see if the below should be applied to your vehicle?

SSM 47972 - 2017 Escape - Auto Stop/Start - No Auto Restart After An Auto
Stop/Start Event - Built On Or Before 02-Feb-2017
Some 2017 Escape vehicles built on or before 02-Feb-2017 may exhibit a no restart concern after an auto stop/start event. Upon attempting to restart, the instrument panel may display a message instructing the customer to shift to park and start the vehicle manually. To correct this condition, reprogram the body control module (BCM) using the latest software level of the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool. For claiming, use causal part 14A068 and applicable labor operations in Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual. If the BCM software is currently at the latest level available, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-06A and/or powertrain control/emissions diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for an auto stop/start diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or GSB0000153 for auto stop/start system information and diagnostics.
