I don't know if 2002 XLS is supposed to have one but i went to change my cabin filter and i was shocked to see where the filter was supposed to be ....it was empty. lots of leaves and stuff though. I cleaned out the area and installed the new filter.

I bought my 02 escape used 2 years ago

Escapes didn't come with one unless you bought it in Canada. Even then, it was a dealer-installed item and many Escapes (like mine) were sold without one being installed.

If you don't need the allergy protection of a cabin air filter, you can buy cut-to-fit lifetime furnace filter material and use that instead. It will get out the larger dust particles and keep the leaves out; take it out and rinse it with a hose once a year.
