Well, came home from work today to find that some low life, thieving :censor: scum has tried to steal the lead roofing from our dining room bay window

Not at all happy with this, reported to the police, they have taken this quite seriously and are actively looking into the matter, esp since wifey and my children were at home when this happened.

Managed to fix the roof so that it's watertight, but I could have done without all the hassle of this............................. :cuss:

 Yikes! Sorry to hear that Cam. I too hope they catch the :censor: that did that.

I'm surprised they went after lead. I've heard of thieves going after copper but never lead...

The theft of lead from roofs is a big problem in Britain, esp at the moment, thanks to the high price it's fetching.

Quite a lot of churches, Victorian mills etc have been stripped of lead flashing in our area, and is the second most reported crime in our locality.

BTW the most reported crime at the moment is the theft of household "Wheelie bins", teenagers are stealing them to set them alight, as being made of plastic they release fumes whilst burning, which the teenagers then inhale........................

Sorry to hear that this happened. :(
The low life scum will get what he deserves sooner or later. What comes around goes around. :taz:
I do imagine that this was scary for your wife and kids and I am glad that they were not harmed.

A year ago last summer it was copper in our Metro area. Dummies were stealing the electric cabling out of the street lamp posts while the power was on  ! One dope electricuted himself :woohoo: . No such luck like that with lead I suppose. :bill:

I know, I shouldn't celebrate someone's demise, but he was causing others to die needlessly by taking away the lighting in dangerous intersections. I have no tolerence for that. ;-|

Today I have installed security floodlighting at the front and rear of the house.

Should the [email protected]$£%@*&$ return, they will get a suntan thanks to the 1000w lamps :calvin:

---When I read your post, I couldn't believe what they are stealing now.
We still have the copper thieves here in the states going strong. Most all scrap metal steel, aluminum, etc. is popular here in the USA, fetches a nice income for scrapers, but never heard about lead being on the list.
I guess that will be next here.
We once lived next to a Police Station years ago. We had two dogs(one was sleeping on our bed), it was a late spring night, and the windows were open. On the gate, next to our bedroom window was a 'beware of dog' sign.
Some teenagers on a treasure hunt sneaked up to the gate and stole the sign.
No police, no barking dogs, and we slept soundly. We found out later through the 'teen' grapevine what went on that night, many items were missing in the neighborhood, ie garden gnomes etc.
Guess those automatic lights would have been good, but were not available back then.
Hope they catch the lead scrappers in your town. (Your town government ought to warn the local scrap yards that they should work with the police or be prosecuted too.)

Scrap metal theft has always been a problem here, even manhole covers on the road dissapear during the night, along with inspection panels on streetlights, alloy wheels on cars etc.

Recently it has got a lot worse, thanks to the economic downturn, the British Transport Police have launched a crackdown on the railways, as signalling wire, track and even the overhead powerlines are dissapearing overnight.

Sadly, our local police force don't have the resources in this area, esp since the beat bobby had his bicycle stolen the other day......................

They are welding down manhole covers in some cities, at least in the US.

I read that a third rail (the electric conductor rail) was stolen off one city's (sorry, I forget which city) transit track. How'd they do that?

Quite true, JJ :thumb:

Our dog didn't hear a thing, which shows just how quiet they were.

However, today we had a visit from the Police, (For some reason he was a Traffic Officer, not a beat bobby), who was very good.
He was concerned about what happened, checked out our home's security measures, offered advice on crime prevention, and got the Forensic Team out to look for clues, and has organised regular Police patrols in our area, esp at night.

Apparently the police have been inundated with calls about the theft of lead, copper etc in the last fortnight from properties around here, they have a good idea whom is doing it, but obtaining the physical evidence to arrest them is proving difficult.
