hey everyone.. my friend and i need a little help. i have an 06 ford escape and i want to install my cd player from my other car and my subs. i have the Mach audio system and i need to know how to remove the silver trim piece around the cd player and ac unit without breaking it.. my old car was as simple as taking a butter knife and popping clips around the edges. but i dont want to risk anything in this car. i also read about a popping after installing a new cd player and subs. and according to http://www.dennisjudd.com/2005/09/2006_ ... eplac.html i need to get a 12 to 5v transistor.. is that true? any help would be great thanks!

You won't even need a butter knife. Just (carefully) pull it away from the instrument panel, using the side of the lighter socket for some leverage.
There's one very important thing to do, though: once you pull the cover away from the instrument panel, do not let the cover's clips touch anything, especially the lower side of the opening in the instrument panel. Those clips are very sharp, and they will leave scratches on the instrument panel if you allow it to make any contact with it. Disconnect everything from the cover, move it out of the way, and wrap it in a towel so it doesn't have a chance to scratch anything.
Those clips could puncture a basketball.

If you're installing a new audio system and a new sub amp (without using any Ford factory audio parts), you won't need to do that "transistor" mod (the 7805 that's shown on that page is actually a voltage regulator, 12V in to 5V out) as long as the systems are matched to each other.

I know from experience that the clips do damage...the sad part is I was warned...
