As far as I understand it, the ABS Tone ring is a common issue, as I just experienced some issues with the front passenger side. The "internet" is flooded with questions about ABS lights coming on and off, ABS kicking in during normal conditions, etc.

My symptoms were as follows:
"Service 4WD System" HUD message
"Service Brake System" HUD message
ABS indicator intermittently illuminated
Intermittent ABS on non slippery road.

It sounds like the original part was made from mostly plastic, and will eventually break. The new replacement parts are made from mostly aluminum. The replacement part is cheap, but if you're having it replaced by a mechanic it'll run you ~$200 or more in labor.

That was me. I was mining the place with Poodle bombs, awaiting your return.

How about a brake booster problem (Hissing inside until brake is applied) is it common? 05 Escape 4 cyl
Bad Brake Power Boost Unit may cause the few small brake issues. There are hissing noises when the brakes are applied, but before applying is quite new for me. Power booster usually works in engine vacuum. It sounds like a possible leak.

@PMFC6, I had the exact same issue with my '05 4 cyl. Incessant hissing under the dash on driver side, except when braking it stops.

It's absolutely the brake booster. I ordered a new one from racepages.com and sent them my old one to get the ~$30 'core deposit' back. LOL, took it to a local ford dealer and they wanted $500 for the repair, said they would have to remove the dash and everything. So I figured I'd do it myself, but my auto-mech bro-in-law beat me to it, took him about a half hour in my folk's driveway, and it works great now.

Be wary taking it to a dealer... :bust:

I have a 2009 Escape xlt, I'm goin to try and explain this as best as I can... as I am driving my vehicle has slowing down gradually, I still had power to everything so I pressed on the gas to try to speed up and nothing. I could still hear the engine running, I would have to pull over shut the car off and I would start it up right away with no problems. Nothing is computing on the dash...2 days ago my neighbor took a look at it and noticed that there is a sensor connected to the gas pedal that was not securely in place, so he snapped it back in and I was hoping that would do it, but of course not it started to happen more often yesterday when usually it was only once or twice a day...so again he lightly disconnected it and it hasn't happened yet. Does anyone have any ideas???? I am so dumbfounded when it comes to cars....PLEASE HELPPPP!!!!

thanks much canada panda for the detailed list of common problems/fixes!! was able to jb weld (waterweld because that's what I had on hand) my broken abs tone ring today (with the help of a large hose clamp) and get back on the road! no more lights on the dash and the regenerative breaking is working oncea gain as normal! obviously yes I have a hybrid :) looking to replace motor electric cooling pump next because it's getting noisy
.. it's not the updated style and has over 70,000 miles on it

I've done a few of these fixes.

First, the IAC on the XLS is a PITA to replace. They stick it in a different location than on the XLT so you have to get underneath and snake your arm up through the guts and do the job blind. For the price of the valve, I recommend just getting a new one. I went from my car dying every time I let off the gas probably 1 out of every 5 days to it not doing it once in about 9 months since I changed it so it was certainly worth the headache.

I also did the throttle body cleaning. The gas pedal was sticking so badly that it'd just about rev up to 3k RPM by the time I was able to get it pressed. Easy fix.

Next up is my clutch master/slave cylinder replacement so that hopefully will end the bottomed out clutch issue. As a quick fix though, I have found that when my clutch loses pressure if I get going fast and gently apply my brake without using the clutch, it puts pressure back into the clutch pedal. I'm sure that's an unadvertised feature.

Falling out or shattering? There have been a few reports of the rear window shattering on Escapes. It doesn't seem that common though and it's not just Escapes...

Here are some previous threads on the subject:

I was lucky and was able to catch the window as it fell when I opened it. My sister on the other hand was not so lucky. She took hers to a Ford dealership and had the window replaced. They told her it was a common problem due to all the salt they use on the roads corrodes the small metal piece that goes threw the glass on the hinge.

So when you say transmission shudder, what do you mean by it? like mine sometimes it seems like my auto tranny drops into a higher gear fast and if you push the gas little to get back up to speed it makes a noise kinda like shuddering? is this shuddering that we are talking about?
