A couple of months after I bought my 08 xlt I had an aftermarket alarm/remote start installed.

I've had 2 times in the past year where for some reason the factory alarm goes off(lights flash and horn honk) and it sets off the aftermarket system as well(maybe the aftermarket sets off the factory in some way, they just both end up going off). I can shut the aftermarket off easy enough with the long range remote but the factory alarm won't stop till it times out or I trot out there and use the key in the ignition.

Before I got the aftermarket system I wasn't able to set the factory alarm off in any way so I assumed it didn't have one and now I find myself wishing it didn't. I always lock the Escape with the remote from the aftermarket so it's nothing to do with the factory keyfob as far as I can figure. I've also checked the wiring listed for installing in the 08 and there isn't a wire listed as factory alarm disable to connect the aftermarket to. I'd rather do this myself if it's easy enough as it's difficult to get the time to bring it back to the installer.

Any ideas on how to shut the factory alarm up for good?

The aftermarket alarm is Prestige APS997A if that info is needed.

Hey! funny seeing this here cause i went crazy on this same thing. mine is only a 2001 but i'm pretty sure it's the same thing happening.
I had no factory alarm but i installed a remote starter it also controls the door locks. So i ditched my old remote and only used my new one. and every once in awhile my horn would go crazy and lights flashing...But it never had an alarm so i thought the same thing your thinking. but i figured it out. it's not the alarm going off it's the panic! if you hold the "LOCK" button on your aftermarket remote it will trip the panic and horn and lights go crazy. on mine i can shut it off by hitting the "UNLOCK" button on my aftermarket remote.
I'm thinking since the keys were always in my pocket i bumped the button and it got held in.
The funny thing is it only happened when i was at my brothers house. once every few months i was thinking one of his neighbors remotes were somehow setting it off

check it out. press and hold your lock button and see if it trips it. Keep me posted if you dont mind. i'm anxious to see if this is what it is!

All Escapes should have come with a factory alarm, which is a perimeter alarm. It arms when you press the lock button on the factory remote, and will trip when a door is opened without first pressing the unlock button on the remote.

Lock your doors by pressing the armrest buttons - the THEFT light on your dash should stay off. It will flash when you use your factory remote. I'm not sure how or why it arms with the aftermarket alarm remote, or how to turn off the factory alarm.

my 01 doesn't have one. I'v tried everything but breaking a window and nothing will happen. the panic button on the factory remote will trip it but that's the only thing that does. I just assumed it's cause it's an XLS. Your right about the light on the dash. i figured it was just a scare thing so people see it blinking. i had a few other vehicles that had the light on the dash with no alarm

It's not from pressing and holding the lock button as the keys weren't in my pocket at the time of any of the activations. The last time it happened I had just picked the keys up off the table to head out but I'm 99% positive I didn't hit any buttons when I picked them up.

I was hoping J Park would have a simple solution to this before my next service, if not I'm going to ask one of the mechanics at the dealer if it's something they could do.

I can't find anything on the service DVD that shows how to disable the system. The only part of the system that I did find shows how to reset the system parameters, and that's done by the dealer.

Sorry that I missed this one!

Mainly what i was trying to say is that, it doesn't have a factory alarm. It's the "panic" that is going off making the horn blow and lights flash. Might have more luck looking into a way to deactivate the panic feature. I dont understand what could be tripping the panic randomly like that though.

Long shot but i have seen peoples dome lights trip aftermarket alarms before. dome light stays on for say 4 minutes "i dont know exactly how long" and the aftermarket alarm monitors voltage any change trips it. And maybe when it trips the aftermarket alarm it automaticly locks the doors "Thats how mine works anyhow" and holds the "lock the doors" signal long enough to trip the panic. if you set your aftermarket alarm and smack it to trip it....... let it go off for like 10 seconds and see if the panic also goes off.

lol ok when i was thinking about that it didnt sound as crazy as it does reading it but i'll leave it in this reply cause ya never know posting.php?mode=reply&f=29&t=2782#

Gotcha. Even without the factory "perimeter alarm", the entire system is part of the Smart Junction Box, and the logic for it is controlled by the same fuse that enables or disables power locks.

Now that you mention the dome light, here's another thing to consider: the dome light circuit looks like it dims, but the dimming is actually a series of square-wave pulses that get shorter and shorter until they stop. You won't really notice this with incandescent lamps, but if you replace the dome and/or map lights with LED retrofits, you'll clearly see flickering as they "fade". Maybe the pulses are setting off your alarm...
