We've got a small aviary which we keep 2 budgies. I decided to shift it so I've had the budgies in a small cage for a week while I cemented a base for the aviary.

The kids have really enjoyed the birds being in the small cage - wanting to feed them each morning and sitting down watching them.

Well this morning we had just put the feed in the cage and my son (aged 3) picked the cage up by the handle and had taken a couple of steps when the top of the cage broke off - and you guessed it - both birds flew away. A bl###y crow chased them so there was no chance of them hanging around and possibly being caught. My son was upset for a few minutes but cheered up when I told him we would buy 2 more when I finish the aviary.

A similar thing happened to me as a kiddo. I never forgot that faux pas. And never stop regreting it, the little birds being lost to the big world and more particularly the Ohio winter... :(

I hope your son is young enough to forget about his birds, and them being lost to the great outdoors.
