According to autos.aol.com, the Escape was the number 1 selling CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) in January 2010. Here's the link to the gallery where they list the top 15 sellers:

We look at the most popular small "cute utes" sold in the month of January, a surprising month where we saw -- for the first time -- the Ford Escape take the top honors in the category.
Deals in the category abound. Because the car companies invested so much in creating these crossovers over the last decade, they're anxious to get them sold. Is there one for you?

This is what they had to say about the Escape:

1. Ford Escape January 2010 Sales: 10,753 Change vs. January 2009: +28.6% MSRP: $21,020 - $27,375 Fuel Economy: 28 mpg Hwy, 22 mpg City
The Ford Escape is a mid-size sport-utility vehicle with credentials that make it equally suited to urban commutes or weekend off-road outings.. The Escape is available in XLS, XLT or Limited trims with either front or four-wheel drive. The XLS features a 171-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. The XLT and Limited trims feature the same 2.5-liter engine with a six-speed automatic transmission.
It is really good to see Ford kicking some rears in the sales segment these days. The E/M/T lineup is really, really affordable and I am still in love with the 4-cylinder & 6 speed trans combo.
