Hi,

I replaced the center console on my 2010 Mariner 2.5 4wd Base, and I noticed that the gear shifter cable (the round part with the white bushing in the middle) that attaches to the gear shifter assembly slide off with ease, using my finger with barely nothing in reassure the cable comes right off from the floor shifter bolt.

Is there a way I hang press the white bushing onto the gear shifter so it “clicks” back in place.

I noticed I have to giggle the shifter for the car to go into reverse.

Thank you
Paul

If I understand, the inside end of the gearshift cable is slipping off the lower end of the shift lever.
Is it possible there was a slide on stamped ring with fingers that grab onto the shift lever arm originally? Many use a ring/washer with barbs that push into the arm to hold cables in place. Very similar to the caps that are used on axles for little wagons, barbecue wheels and others. Some have fully formed 'caps' while others slide onto their shaft and leave everything exposed.
You can buy some retainers at auto parts stores, likely in the 'Help' section. I have bought an assortment with the hope of finding one that will work at times in the past. These things just slide onto the axle or arm and are difficult to remove.
One other tactic would be to rotate the cable housing 180 so if it has a tendency to move in one direction(off..) then rotating would make it want to stay in place.
