Hey Escape-Citians
Just wondering who has gotten or plan on getting the H1N1 shot? My mom works at a hospital and said all the docs there are not getting the shot themselves b/c they say it's still "experimental" and this virus hasn't been out long enough to formulate a good vaccine...yet.
I've never gotten any flu shot and I've never gotten the flu but I plan on getting a flu shot this year since so many of my kiddos have been sick...but probably won't get the H1N1 shot. Thoughts and/or comments??

My doc here said they have run out of the flu vaccine. Hence, I haven't gotten a flu shot (seasonal or H1N1). I don't think I will get the H1N1 but will get the seasonal flu shot if I can find it.

Dasha Dear, I wife also has never had a Flu Shot and has never had the Flu. You Folks are the lucky ones. I've now worked 5 Flu Shot Clinics this fall. Two seasonial and 3 H1N1. This stuf is nothing to mess with. A lot of folks get it and it's no worse than the Seasonial, However for a large number it is a KILLER. Our town of 65,000 people have lost 4 already. :shades:

I have never gotten a flu shot and do not plan to. Also not planning on getting the H1N1. A couple of years back a co worker got the flu shot and ended up getting very sick. The odds of that happening may be very low ( ) but I will take my chances and continue to take precautions as I have in the past.

I got mine saturday (was offered to all the paramedics and firefighters in Montreal and over 90% of us got poked)

As for the vaccine being "experimental" or "not tested enough", thats a crock... it's the SAME vaccine as the seasonal flu vaccine thats been going around for the last 10-15 years except that they change the strain of inactivated flu virus for the season, or in this case for the H1N1 epidemic.

Working on the front lines I've seen what this flu does to patients... the ones who REALLY get it go from people in shape with no medical history, to a feverish blob of jello who doesn't even have the strength to get up from bed... in less than 24 hours!

And the really scary thing is that contrary to seasonal flu which seriously mangles or kills mostly elderly, weak and sickly patients, the majority of H1N1 victims up to now are people in the 15-55 range who were in good shape and had no medical past at all.

As Arsenio used to say... "Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm!"

My wife got hers last week as she works on a rehab unit. My daughter is considered high risk and will also be getting one. You always her of the one or two people who get a bad reaction, but fail to realize the millions that are benefiting. Those who get sick were probably already sick or infected with another strain of virus. I get one as do my parents every year. No big deal. H1N1 shot is made no differently than other vaccines. A flu shot is nothing to fear.
30,000+ die from flu each year, that's scary!

1. Get the shot and face the possibillity of getting sick.
2. Don't get the shot and face the posibillity of getting sick and DYING!
I'll take option 1 when it becomes availlable to me.
London's already been hit pretty hard by this flu with several deaths young and old. I trust that they would not release the vaccine without some testing so I'm willing to take a chance.

I have gotten flu shots before and all it did was give me a cold lasting all winter, almost like it works on the Mr. Burns Theorem. Plug you up with lesser viruses so the big bad flu virus can't squeeze in. I have a fairly good breathing mask in case the neighbours turn into Infecteds. I'll take my chances.

There was a Canadian sci-fi series, ReGenesis, which I describe as a mix between CSI and 24 (they're better than CSI in the science respect; I've never seen a CSI so much as balance a centrifuge properly). On their series finale, they "predicted" H1N1 as the Pandemic of 2010, and it was an engineered strain of the Spanish Flu. The genetic sequence of the real Spanish Flu was reconstructed not long after the main character of the series did the same on the show. How long until someone catches on and blames the Canadians?

I dunno....don't really like the thought of putting a live virus anything in my body. I've had 4 students in my class sick w/the flu so far....one with H1N1. If I can remain flu-free after being in a classroom w/17 pairs of germy hands and 17 runny noses and 17 coughing mouths, I'm thinking I'm gonna pass on the H1N1 flu shot. Not sure about the seasonal flu shot....still mulling it over.
Thanks for the comments!!

I have never had a flu shot and neither has anyone else in my family and none of us have had it. I have been told that I should get the shots every year by my doctors since I have asthma and pretty constant sinus activity, but never do. My girlfriend is a nurse and was confirmed with H1N1 last week and I tended to her the whole time without getting it. I'm not worried about it, it seems more hyped to me, but that's my opinion and I do understand that it is a variation of the spanish flu of 1918 and had the makings of causing the same devastation, but people are much more hygienic now a days.

Also, from what I understand, the number of cases might be a little skewed due to the number of samples they have to process, they don't have enough time to perform all the tests.

I'll probably pass on both shots.
But, this happened when my daughter was a baby, she was 7 mos old.
The doctor vaccinated her for smallpox (required back then). A few hours later
she developed a terribly high fever, & started banging her head on the headboard of her crib. The next day, her eyes kept rolling back in her head.
I took her to the doctor and he said get her into the hospital asap.
It turns out that she developed encepalitis from the shot. To make a long story
short, she nearly died and had some neurological damage. Her hand shook,
and later, when she started to talk, speech problems(she couldn't hear/discern certain consonants). Theraphy cured the speech problem, but her hand still
shakes at times. The doctor told me that a lot of babies died or ended up permanantly mentally defective from that batch of vaccine.

No shots, ever. I was a pin cushion while in the Army. Not going there unless I have to now.

What is wrong with the picture of the Government giving flu shots out to people that are at risk? Nothing I suppose  , except it is only for those at risk  . Those are the people standing in line in the rain with thier kids up all night long. Aren't they taking a risk with people at risk? :bill:

I was told on the 30th that i would get one before surgery and 30 mins later a lady from the county showed up with one. So I was given a bunch of vaccines before the 2nd. I hadn't had a flu shot since 1994, and I'll probably not get it again unless we are supposed to get them regularly as we get older. It seems like I've aged 20 years since surgery. But that should go away in a week or two??!!??

With the surgery now behind you, I hope that you feel better each day as you recuperate. :)

I will take my chances.
Not going to be vaccinated.

##
Have my reasons for not being immunised.
Our cities are polluted.
We do not know what is in, our drinking water from reservoirs.

#
Remember that nuclear accident at 'Chernobyl'?.
I am more concerned with radiation poison.
Our governments should be, concentrating on solar and thermal energy.

#
If you are willing, to accept being injected with poison."BY ALL MEANS GO FOR IT!"
Injecting organisms into your body to provoke immunity,"IS CONTRARY TO NATURE!".
