So, I've had my 2008 Escape for about 3 weeks now. I've had to fill up several times and it appears I'm only getting a little over 400KMs per tank.

I could have swore I read numerous people mention how they get about 600kms/tank.

Does this sound right?

I should also mention that 95% of my driving is a 25 minute highway drive to and from the train station at a speed of approx. 110 - 120kms.

I have about 2000kms on the SUV right now.

I rented a Mariner with V6 and 4x4 a few weeks ago and drove about 700 miles. I noticed I did not get very good mileage either. Now I was speeding just a bit but I would have hoped for more. One thing that can happen is the PMC learns how you drive over time and makes adjustments to your driving style. It may have picked up alot of test drive info from many drivers. If you disconnect the battery for several minutes the PMC is reset and it will start learning fresh with you as the driver in your environment. It may take a tank to see any difference but it might help.

Also remember the usual mileage helpers.

Good tire pressure
watch speed
No rabbit starts
roof rack drag

We are getting about 300-325 miles per tank full (12-13 gallon US). But that's suburban driving with lots of starts and stops. Almost no highway. The Escort it replaced got about the same mileage. 20 mpg in town, 28 highway. The Tribute 2.3L with auto is about the same. I wanted more mpg, but reality bites sometimes...

Right now I'm averaging 22.8 miles per gallon. This is mostly driving country roads and some city and with the AC running.

I have done as good as 24.7 miles per gallon under the same driving conditions and no AC.

I believe that the Escape has a 16 gallon tank.

Wait at least 5000 km in a new vehicle before you make any conclusions about gas mileage or performance.

Soo true, Squishy !! :) My mileage did improve after I had driven the vehicle for a few months. I currently have just under 12,000 miles on it. Purchased in June, 2007.

Ditto. When I first got mine I was getting about 19mpg with the 4 banger, and now, about 11,000 miles later, I get about 22-23 mpg. The best I've got so far is 29.

*Also, I apparently drive waaaaaaaay more than Colleen :play: ... bought mine in Dec. 07*

My current tank is the first one in a while that I have run to almost empty. It is at 550 km right now, and the gas light came on at around 510 km. The best mileage I have gotten over the last 608 days (as far as my log goes) is 26.6 MPG (8.9 L/100 km); the worst is 14.6 MPG (16.1 L/100 km).

My FWD V6 seems to be right at the top limit as far as mileage goes. I use synthetic 0W-30 oil and Dexron VI transmission oil with an external transmission filter. I keep revs below 2500 RPM at most times unless I am passing or merging into traffic (or just feel like having fun). For flat terrain, I try to keep my speed around 70 km/h; 90 km/h for hilly terrain (100 km/h on highways). I use cruise control whenever I can.

I won't recommend Dexron VI because it will void your warranty, and there is no guarantee that it will work in your transmission. While Ford and GM transmissions are fairly similar in design, Dexron VI is a GM product and not specifically designed for Ford transmissions. In fact, Dexron VI and Mercon V are pretty much opposites in fluid characteristics. Ford went for a thicker fluid while GM went thinner, which is why you are unlikely to ever see a dual usage Dexron VI/Mercon V fluid like you did with Dexron III/Mercon.

That said, my CD4E just loves the stuff. If you follow Top Gear, there was one episode where a car was claimed to be able to shift faster than you can blink. I have that! Dexron VI was partly designed to improve shift quality, and it really shows. The added low-temperature protection doesn't hurt, either.

My Tributes tranny is shifting really hard into 3rd. Kinda throw you through the windscreen hard. It's got fresh Mercon fluid in it and is at the right level but it still seems to be doing it. I think if it gets any worse I might try the switch to Dex VI.

Talking of Top Gear, have you seen the new Australian version on YouTube? It's a load of rubbish, but i'll let you be the judge ;)

Anywho back on topic, mine isn't a 2008 but I get around 520ish km's to a tank of mixed driving in the Tribute.

The 2008 Australian model Escape/Tribute had different shift points and different a engine managment system. It was claimed to increase fuel economy by 11%. Maybe the American 2008's had this too?

I haven't seen the Australian version yet, I will probably get to it once original Top Gear starts airing again.

I don't know if the PCM programming has changed in the 2008s, either. I haven't really kept up with all of the changes with each model year. Almost everything I know about models other than my 2003 have been gathered from other people's comments.

Most recent fill up was 340 miles. 2.3L four with auto. Took 13.4 gallons, and that was filling it up the filler neck...
