Oxford has announced their "Word of the Year" for 2008 and it is HYPERMILING.

http://blog.oup.com/2008/11/hypermiling/

First listed in 2004, this term took only four years to reach the award. As defined by Oxford Dictionary:
Hypermiling or to hypermile is to attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one's car and one's driving techniques. Rather than aiming for good mileage or even great mileage, hypermilers seek to push their gas tanks to the limit and achieve hypermileage, exceeding EPA ratings for miles per gallon.

For those interested... last year's Word was "locavore" (eating food grown locally) and the 2006 word was "carbon neutral" :thumb:

I really hate those hybrids that do 60 mph in the left lane. :censor:
If you don't like my driving, stay off the sidewalk!

j/k! I'm sure you have seen that as a bumper sticker. I just thought it bore repeating here. :D

BTW, speaking of off. My Aunt Dottie is just fine.... :)

When I first bought my Escape, I tried to adhere to a few hypermiling techniques for my first mostly highway tank of gas. I eased up to speeds, anticipated stops, tried to keep rpms below 2100, top speed 65. My big reward was a lot of nasty looks and 25.43 mpg. Last week made four trips to DIA airport for Thanksgiving visitors and drove normally, 75 mph and got 22.3.
My Volvo, on the other hand typically gets 30-31 mpg 75-80 +mph on long trips. Tried another round recently sort of hypermiling, easing up to speeds 65-70mph and got over 35mpg. 18 gallon tank had nearly 600 miles when I went to fill and confirm. I guess it depends on your level of dedication. I admit, I'd rather just enjoy the drive instead of feathering the gas all day.

Hypermilling is an attention to detail that becomes automatic if practiced enough. I drive that way now almost all the time. Ease up to speed, come off the gas early anticipating stops and red lights. Go the speed limit... what a concept!
