In the last month, I noticed that when I turn the key to start the car, it takes a bit longer for the car to start, maybe 1/2 to a full second. It used to start much faster, almost instantaneously, definitely less than half a second. What could this mean? It's a 2008 Escape Hybrid w/ 120k miles.

Thanks!!!

So it doesn't even try to turn over for .5-1 second, or the engine turns over but takes .5-1 second to fire? If it doesn't even try to turn over, if you push the key in further while turning, does that make it work normally? There is a part that wears out frequently that can cause this.

Hey wow! Pushing the key in further as I turn it seems to make it start up much faster. Thanks! So what's the part that wears out? I wonder if it's easy to replace (probably not, if inside the steering column).

(And, to be clear, no -- the ignition doesn't try to turn over for .5-1 second. It's silent).

To me it does sound like it is the Ignition Lock Module, this shows it with a Hybrid:
