So this has really bugged me. I have a 2004 Escape and when I have the doors open while im cleaning it out or if I have a few 2x4's hanging out the back window the front map lights will stay on and there is no way to shut them off. At least there are switches on the other two lights. So this is how to install a switch on the front lights and to allow the use of the map lights while the door lights are shut off. So here is a Video " how to" I made on my iPhone 4. http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z66/ ... G_0163.mp4

OK, don't take this the wrong way, but I think still pictures would have been better to illustrate the procedure. Shaky video just doesn't do it for me. Other than that, I think it's a great idea. Always wanted to do something like that, and now I know how......thanks to you. :) I even took my own pictures of the procedure by pausing the video at the appropriate places and shooting the paused video. Easier to go over it again if I have to review. Hope this works on my '05 Escape. I'm going to have to look into this.

I know this thread is REALLY old,but i watched that vid and noticed something. When i open my doors my center dome light and my rear cargo light come on automaticly, but the only way my front map lights turn on is if press the switch in. Any ideas why this might be? I noticed his escape is an 04 and mine is an 01,could it be something they added between those years? The front seat area of my car is SOOOO dark at night with just the dome light on and getting these map lights to come on with the others would be GREAT!!!

From what I can tell it should be possible to fit a newer roof unit to an '01 ~ '03 model, but you would still have to run another cable from the GEM below the centre of the dash, up the A-pillar and along to the dome / map lights.
