License Plate lights??? Cant get them out

Does anyone have any tips on how to get the license plate lights out on a 2005 Mercury Mariner. It looks like they should slide to the side and come out. I can get them to slide over a little but as much as I pull or try to snap them out they seem like they will break. Anyone have any ideas or tips????

if your still having trouble just give it a good push and it will come out. I had to struggle with mine too then I just pushed it over using a flat screwdriver that was wrapped in duct tape. I have noticed most people have the light on the passengerside burning out. Is that the one that burned out on yours?
