Moonroof Switch

Need help guys. I know that the moonroof switch is an issue with the 'Scapes. Does anybody know how to fix the switch or do they have to be replaced and how much would it cost? If there is a way to disassemble the switch and do some magic to it and fix it that would be the best thing.

Thanks!

What is it doing? (Or what isn't it doing?)
Sometimes you have to press it 2 or 3 times to engage it. That started the day I got it, it was still under warranty at the time, and the service person made a note of it. I don't think I'll have much luck getting it repaired under warranty at this point, so wanted to see if my DH could take a crack at it.

The problem was intermittant at first, but now it seems to be even more balky, and I'm afraid that it'll get stuck open. Do you know how to rebuild these things?
I've never really seen one of these switches, but if you can take it out, try to operate it out in the open. If it starts working then, pop it back in and check for signs of sticking. Get some electrical contact cleaner and, holding the switch with the plastic face facing up, spray it under the face and into the internals. If any contact cleaner gets onto the plastic face, wipe it off with a tissue - some are not plastic safe and will either leave a white residue or dry out the plastic. You can also spray the wiring contacts on the switch side and the wiring harness side too for good measure. Operate the switch as you allow the cleaner to dry. (Edit to clarify: I don't mean plug it in and operate it - I mean operate it unplugged)

What kept the dealership from replacing the switch while you were under warranty? If you still have a copy of the work order where the tech made note of it, you should be able to establish that the issue started while you were under warranty and get it replaced.

The switch was intermittant at that point and worked sometimes. I'll try the method you described; or rather my DH will try it and will let you know what happened.

Thanks a heap! :D
You're fast :D

I had to edit my post above because it was unclear what I mean by "operate the switch".
Hey Kiki,

Glad I finally found you guys...

I've had my moonroof switch replaced 3x for the same problem. The first time it was replaced under warranty. The second time I replaced it myself when the dealer couldn't get it to malfunction. I replaced it a third time about 2 years ago and so far this one works (mostly). The first time I purchased the switch I think it was about $32. The second time I got it for $16 because I got the Service Adviser to give me a discount since I had the switches checked just about every time I took it in for service.

The last time I did the replacement I took a bunch of pictures with the intent of adding the how-to to my website. I'll see if I can find those pics and post them here. It's really easy to do but I've had problems with all the new switches. I personally think there is something fundamentally wrong with the design. My dealer told me they thought there might be a short somewhere in that circuit causing the problem. They couldn't believe that I would get 2 bad switches in a row... I actually have an issue with the current switch but it's on the open side of the switch. Since this has the auto-open feature, I don't notice it often. It closes perfectly so I'm happy with this switch...

Like I said... I'll look to see what I can find to help you replace it if you need to...

Hey RobtRoma!!! Glad you made the trip over to the City! Thanks for the info on the switch. It sounds like it's not cost prohibitive to buy it from the dealer and then do the install. I was afraid that it was some outrageous amount of money.

BTW, this site hasn't quite made its formal announcement to the world, so keep it under wraps for the time being. How did you find out about it? Just curious, but very glad you found it. I was RB at the "other" site.
Thanks for the welcome KK/RB. It wasn't too costly and it's really easy to replace. I found the pics and I'm in the process of prepping them for posting. If not tonight, then I'll post them tomorrow for sure.

As for finding this site... While doing a little digging, I happened upon a nut left by a little squirrel at the other site...

Here are 2 pics of the switch in the bag it came in:

Here is a pic of the over head console:

Open the garage door transmitter door in the console and unscrew the two screws:

Pull the console down carefully. This is what you will see:

Disconnect the switch connection:

Use a screwdriver to pop the switch out:

Push the wire thru the hole:

Here is a picture of the switch:

Here is a picture of the connector:

To install the new switch, reverse the process... It's that simple...

The "boss" wants me too, but I don't know how to hint folks to the "City" without giving directions :?
Who be this "boss" you refer to?

We are so very close to being able to announce this site. We have just a few elements to put in place yet. It won't be too long.

I feel EXACTLY the same way. But we just have to be patient a little bit longer. JP'll tell you, I'm the very image of patience. Right JP?
I think the "Boss" is sleeping in this AM.
I think you're right!
I think we're the only ones up this AM...JJ isn't even up over "there"
