If your hand was resting on the shifter, you could have had enough pressure on it to make it think it was not in Reverse.
I have a similar strategy. I drive around in L about 95% of the time to get as much regen as possible. If I'm on a long downhill I shift to D and the excess recharge will stop, especially if I'm braking.
