The selector is sensitive. Many times I will downshift to L to charge the pack when going down hill. At times it may be too much regen, and all I have to do is lightly push forward on the shifter (Not enough for it to click into Drive) for regen to stop. If your hand was resting on the shifter, you could have had enough pressure on it to make it think it was not in Reverse.

I have a similar strategy. I drive around in L about 95% of the time to get as much regen as possible. If I'm on a long downhill I shift to D and the excess recharge will stop, especially if I'm braking.
