2017 Escape SE 4WD 1.5 t

I have a few noise issues (some of which are probably me being over protective) the one I'm addressing here is a clicking noise that sporadically comes from the accelerator pedal when putting my foot on and r=taking it off of the pedal . I've owned a lot of vehicles and the clicking coming from the accelerator pedal is something I've never heard before so I thought I'd ask here. I already took to my dealer and they couldn't reproduce the sound, I wasn't surprised since it's intermittent but they also acted like I was a lunatic (it may be true but they didn't have to act like that). The only way I can get video/audio to post on here is by putting a link to my twitter account where I posted the video. Video is about 35 sec. long and you can hear this clicking several times throughout. If some people want to give it a listen and give me their opinion it would be super helpful

My friend, with it being intermittent, is an aftermarket floor mat sliding around and making contact? I have seen that before.

Did you have a rock lodged in the soul of your shoe, I have seen that as well

The only thing I would say to do is get down there on your knees and push the pedal with your fingers, have a flashlight handy and make sure no wires are making contact at the top of the pivot

Look closely at the pivot as you wrangle the pedal around a bit, and make sure there are no cracks at the pivot mounts.

Do you have children, maybe a drinking straw, or lego got wedged up under there...

It is too bad your weird camera angle did not show the movement of the pedal…

Advice very much appreciated! I’ll get down and check it out, I never thought of having the camera set to catch pedal movement but after visual inspection that’s my next step.
Thanks again!!

Ok I believe I got decent video where you can both hear the clicking noise and see the pedal while it's doing it. I not 100% if the video is good enough but if anyone wants to listen and give their opinion on what it might be I'd appreciate it because it drives me insane. attached is the link to a short video of it.

Hi , lol your obviously not a Nut as its obvious , is there a micro switch in/under there attached to the pedal arm? like to disable/enable cruise control like a brake pedal would (touch the brake pedal in cruise control mode and it disengages) , sounds something like that , btw i have a much earlier year model so would not have a clue , good luck .
Added , took another look/listen and it seems both ways down and up so it does not seem like its a noisy stop limit which would be on the up , a switch sounds good to me although its a loud one .

I am surprised you cannot get it to make the noise when your head is down there… But I am going to guess something like the pedal pad is becoming detached from the arm... just trying to imagine what could possibly click, both when pressure is applied, and released.

There is a small crack on the pivot maybe... seeing you wiggle your foot on it, barely moving the pedal, makes it seem like something is becoming dismounted like the pedal pad

it sounds plastic, not metal

Here's a question for you, does it only do it when it is running? that would seem to be a good directional indicator if it only makes a noise when the power is on, leading you to a switch malfunction.

My cruise control will not turn off when gas is applied, but there must be an override/bypass switch there for passing. Once you take your foot off the gas with the cruise control engaged, it will settle right back down to its set speed.

I don't know if the light was on for your recording, but you might try again… Maybe put a flashlight under the dash, so you can see the movement at the top of the pedal arm as well

I mean, if you weren't drive by wire, it sounds like an oldschool carburetor actuator cable at the top of the pedal has play

Gentleman thanks for your advice/wisdom! I'll be out later and I'm going to crawl under even further to see if I can locate any cracks or any indication that it is the pedal pad coming loose and possibly get a better light down there. I can also test out the does it only do it when it's running theory (quality idea by the way). Updates to come.

Thanks Again!

Mountain Escape after crawling down and getting as far down as I could under the pedal I believe you have a great set of ears, it does sound more plastic than metal. Im posting parts of the two videos I took, again if anyone wants to give them a listen it would be great. That being said I’m scheduling it to go back to the dealership now that I know the sound can be recreated while the engine is off and by hand (Mountain, bravo on the idea again!).

fair warning these videos are me laying on my side one hand taking video with my phone and the other working the pedal. Long way of saying you may puke while watching them…….1

It looks like you have a lot of play in that top (Circular) pivot on the arm… It is definitely making noise, sounded more squeaky though.

in the first video, it looks like the side to side play witnessed in the bottom video is allowing the backside of the pedal to make contact with a little tiny accelerator assembly mounting bolt stud that is sticking through the firewall. The clicking noise I believe is coming from the threads on this little stud, I am pretty sure I can even see abrasion marks where the pedal is hitting it(The plastic in that spot looks more gray than black).

I believe a new pedal assembly will solve your problem… You could also get under there with a close quarters hacksaw and saw off the end of the stud bolt.

then shoot some silicone(Don't use petroleum based lubricant on plastic) into the pivot and it will probably stop the squeak

probably get one for pretty cheap from a salvage yard… They are not expensive new.

That was my general (although I have very little actual knowledge) opinion as well. Once you got down there its a squeak more than a click, seemed to be coming from plastic on plastic or plast on metal friction so that little screw you’re referencing makes sense. I’m not sure what they’ll do about it but it’s under warranty so back to the dealership I go, this time with more evidence. Thanks for the input it’s very helpful!
