If you're just working on your own vehicle(s), then get a scanner like the Craftsman OBDII Scanner Sears is selling for $189. It'll probably do everything you want it to do, and I think it comes with all the software you'll need to check out your own vehicle(s), too.

I'm planning on getting that Craftsman scanner soon. I have an ancient AutoXray scanner that spits out minimal code info (all the data-grabbing abilities I really wanted required extra modules that I was far too cheap to buy), but between sites like this and the scanner's ability to clear the "Check Engine" light, it worked well enough for me to diagnose problems over the years. Time to upgrade, though. :)
