It would be easy to use code on an arduino to provide a sine wave that every 36th is skipped, I have done similar with arduino and simple sine wave using 555 circuit (without the skip, but with ability to change speed, for example).

But really, EPAS isn't enabled without a valid signal from the crankshaft sensor? I would think it is more likely to use some CANBUS messaging, which I suppose is only sent if it senses valid crankshaft data?

I'm not sure what the PCM needs to start sending signals over HS-CAN to the EPAS module. Presumably some sort of ignition signal, but I am not sure beyond that.

It would be nice if there was simply an EPAS-enable input on the ECU

Rectangle Font Slope Parallel Schematic

Any idea where this wire runs? Indicates it goes to the smart junction box but can't find the fuse that it would seem to go with. I am thinking maybe I could at least get it to run in a failsafe mode with just that wire live.

Thanks -- so it looks like fuse 35 is fusing some/all of the pins on connector C2280b, one of which feeds the run/start pin on the power steering control module. Do you happen to have the pinout for C2280b? Or any idea what the run/start pin is looking for? just 12v? 5v?

Ok here's what I've measured so far:

Fuse 35 shows 0v with key off, 12v with key on.

Run/start pin, which appears to be shown as pin 9 on C2280b: 0v with key off, 12v with key on.

So that's not the issue. I am surprised it doesn't just run in a failsafe mode with a fixed level of assist when it receives run/start but no CAN messages.

So you are suggesting it should work without CAN? I was thinking it would need e.g. speed data via CAN.

But seeing as it's labeled as a diagnostic then maybe not?

It is definitely possible that there is just an issue with the power steering motor itself or something. It's been almost 2 years since the power steering has been running, since the engine has been out for about that long.
