Getting ready to do my rear brakes on a '05 Mariner V6 4x4...any advice? I did them before, 4 years ago with my father in law...don't remember there being an issue just can't remember if they are discs or drums. Anyone know?
Just look at them. If they look like the bottom side of a cake pan with ridges along the perimeter, it's probably a drum. If it looks like your front brake, it's a disc.

And if they are discs the also house the parking brake shoes inside them.they kinda like a drisc, a drum disc all in one..So that is more info to add to the saga...

Reviving this thread!! I have an '05 with discs all around. Are the front disc brakes different sizes on the models with all disc brakes as opposed to the models with disc/drum combo? Reason I ask, I purchased some rotors for the front, and notice they have two different rotors, both the same, but different prices. So I wonder if the more expensive ones go on the all disc...?

Yes, there is a difference in front brake rotors between those Escapes/Mariners/Tributes that have 4 wheel disc brakes and those with front disc and rear drums. Those with 4 wheel disc brakes have an 11.92" diameter front brake rotor (it is also roughly 0.10" thicker) while those with front disc/rear drum have a 10.94" diameter front rotor.

While on the subject of brakes, I have rear disc brakes on my Escape and I have yet to replace them, and I'm at 125k miles. I've disassembled them twice; removed the pads, clean the slides, lubricate everything. The pads are making good contact with the rotor but still look new. I have replaced the front brakes 3 times since I bought the truck at 55,000 miles. I'm pretty hard on my brakes. Did they not get the brake proportioning dialed in right on the '05-'06 Escapes with the rear disc brake option?

Well, this is an old thread.

I have a '05 XLT Escape and it came "stock" with rear disc brakes.

I believe all the '01 to '04 models came with only rear drum brakes on all their packages, and '05 being first year that received rear disc---only if you got the XLT/Limited or Boundary models. I think the XL still only came with drum rear brakes.
