Hello. The brackets that hold the running boards on my Escape have being showing some signs of rust and I would like to repaint them. I have already removed the brackets and started using steel wool and sand paper (100 grit I think) to remove loose paint and surface rust. I have purchased Rustoleum "Rusty Metal Primer" and Rustoleum "Flat Protective Enamel". I do not have much painting experience.

My questions are:
1) According to the Rustoleum can I am to remove loose paint and rust. I can get all the loose stuff off with steel wool and the sandpaper but there is still some rust colored surface. I can sand it off to get to bare metal but is it necessary? Should I be sanding these entire brackets to bare metal or will the Rustoleum primer take care of it?

2) Are these the right painting products for the job?

Thanks.

you wanna get as much rust off as possible, in your case the rust has etched into the surface. then get a good even coat of primer. In a manner of speaking you want to create a air tight seal from the metal surface to the air.
