So what do you think of the Escape?

Hello, this summer our family plans on buying a new vehicle to replace our aging Accord. This time around we wanted to get something that was more capable and roomier than the Accord. We need the following capabilities from the vehicle we choose:

Capability- Needs to be able to handle the snow/wintery conditions of our area.

Fuel economy- We want a vehicle that can average at least 25 MPG highway. BTW, not interested in the hybrid.

Roomy- Big enough to hold 3-4 adults and their luggage on long trips.

Cost- Our family doesn't want to spend much more than $25k.

After doing some research I narrowed it down to the Ford Escape Limited 4x4/4 cylinder and the Jeep Patriot Limited 4x4. I already asked about the Patriot on forums related to that vehicle, they had very good things to say about the vehicle. A lot of people that own the Freedom Drive One Patriot get between 24 and 28 MPG highway, it works well in the snow, they find the vehicle to be roomy, and they got very good deals on them. I also told them I was cross-shopping the Patriot with the Escape, surprisingly they had to say good things about the Escape. In fact many members on that website are currently deciding between the Patriot and Escape. So to complete my research I came here to gather some data from owners.

I just wanted to ask a few questions and see what owners think of the Escape. So please share your experiences with me. We plan on getting a fully loaded Escape with most of the factory options: Moonroof, Navigation, Heated Seats, Dual Zone Auto Climate Controls, Auto-Dimming mirror, etc. Now I wanted to ask a few questions. Does the 4WD Escape come with a locking differential? We have another 4WD vehicle with this feature and we found it to be extremely helpful in the snow, especially getting up snowy driveways. What do you guys think of the stock tires? Especially in the winter. Is it possible to order the Moonroof and Navigation on the same vehicle? When I went to the Ford website and built an Escape the build your own tool would remove the "Sun/Tune package" when we selected the navigation option, is the Moonroof part of the navigation option? Finally what do you guys think of the rear seat legroom and storage space in the rear?

That's about all the questions I can think of. Right now we are leaning towards the Jeep Patriot since it seems to get great fuel economy while giving the driver confidence in the winter and it seems like they can be had for cheaper. I understand the Escape comes with more features on the Limited, but we really want to keep the price around $25k. We will visit the local Ford dealer and see what he is willing to do. Just to tell you guys now we didn't sit in or drive either vehicle yet. I have come to this website just to see what you guys think of the Escape so I can get an idea if the Escape is right for me and my family. Thanks for your time.

I'm very greedy. Right now I am looking into buying a new vehicle and I am workin like 5 diffirent dealerships then I am going to make them battle eachother lol
Have any of the dealers give you a deal you couldn't refuse?
Nope not yet. They just have to know you are willing to walk away...then they will be willing to sell for the price I want :)

I am surprised they didn't give you the price you wanted without the hassle.
The problem at hand right now is I have to sell the Escape. They won't give me what I owe on it naturally so I have to sell it on my own if possible. I have it listed on Craigslist and on Autotrader right now.

You're selling the 2007 Escape you own? Why? It looks brand new. Looking to upgrade?

Oh btw exciting news, the dealer called about 20 minutes ago to inform me they are picking up our Escape today. They will also install the accessories and prepare it for us. It will be ready for pick up tomorrow, how exciting!!! :D

Hello again guys, today we picked up our Loaded 2009 Ford Escape Limited V-6/6 Speed Auto/4WD. We drove it home about 30 miles and it was a great ride. It has a smooth ride, plenty of pick-up, it's agile and comfortable. They picked up the Escape from a dealer in New York state so it had about 120 miles on it when we got to the dealership. Overall I am very happy with our purchase, my only concern still is the fuel economy. I checked the fuel economy they averaged on the trip from New York and it only got 17.6 MPG, we will be very disappointed if the fuel economy doesn't improve to the EPA estimate of 24 MPG by time the vehicle is broken in. I have some hope though, my parents made me drop them off somewhere and during the 12 mile round trip my fuel economy went up to 20 MPG. On my second round trip to pick them up and take them back it went up to 20.6 MPG before dropping back to 20 MPG when I came home for the final time. During these minor trips I got to use the Ambient Lighting, another feature we really like.

The 2009 Escape is equipped with the capless fuel system, we noticed one of the pop out panels (By the Sirius Satellite radio box) in the back had a plastic funnel like device. It is needed if you ever plan on filling up the vehicle from a gas can. I also got to check out the navigation system which is very cool, I am glad we ordered it. I briefly tried on the Sirius Traffic Navigation service which was awesome. It showed me the nearest gas stations with the lowest prices, it displayed the weather data for the area I was in, plus it displayed nearby movie theaters with movies currently playing with times. I was shocked it worked in my area, I thought the service was only available in cities. The only feature I didn't try out yet was Sync, we plan on upgrading our cell phones in the next few months to take advantage of the 911 service and vehicle diagnostic reports, our current cell phones do not have Bluetooth. Since this vehicle wasn't factory ordered our Escape came with the optional 17" Chrome Clad Alloy wheels, which are beautiful plus they seem to have better Michelin tires. Our vehicle is also equipped with the wet trunk, so we have additional storage space. I was also pleasantly surprised that this vehicle came with the Audiophile system, which didn't cost us a dime. So overall I am very happy with the vehicle, I look forward to driving this vehicle for years to come. I will keep you guys informed on my owners experience. As I promised here are some pictures I took while at the dealer, if you want to see something that I didn't take a picture of inform me and I will see what I can do. Enjoy:

Very nice dude!!
Love the colour choice. :thumb:

They really dressed up the interior since my 2003. "Chrome Clad Alloy wheels" I thought the chrome-clad wheels were steel with a shiny cover. Is this something else?

Yep glad to be one of you guys, this is an awesome vehicle. It's even better than I expected and I am glad we settled on the Escape. About the wheels as far as I know they are alloy wheels coated with chrome, it has no cover.

Thanks, you should have heard the sales guy. He was bragging how great it looked over the phone.
Hello Escape - PA -. That is a beautiful grey escape you purchased. It looks quite stunning and elegant. I admire those leather seats and interior. Can anticipate you will turn a few heads ,when it is being driven or parked. Anyway i have allways believed, a bit of pride and joy does not harm anyone.

Currently imagining your new escape receiving attention. This would be expressions, from other drivers of interest and admiration. Especially when my escape has been detailed, i enjoy observing facial expressions. It is only a car. Why do they look intrigued. There must be something about our models that people like.

I am not envious of my ' Little Tonka ' being observed. The other drivers seem to like my car. This is good. I don't have a problem with that. Males can have their peculiarities. It is when women react to my car, that i soak it right up like an ink blotter. I love it! as in lapping it right up.

Hey Stone nice to hear from you again. So far everyone that has seen the vehicle loved how it looked, I am glad we got chrome wheels it really makes the Escape look elegant. When my parents decided to order a grey color I thought it would look bland, but in reality it looks great. I don't think you should feel bad that you take joy in people liking your vehicle. It's hard work keeping a vehicle looking good so you deserve it. ;)
Awesome colour combination, awesome interior, and I like the options yours came with...I think I'd order/buy one the same as yours, except maybe with the Blue Ink exterior (Wifey wants Blue or Redfire for our next vehicle, and she's leaning towards the 09+ Escapes after our 06 is mostly paid for).

Your truck has so many stock options, that you likely won't need to upgrade anything at all for a while.

Best of luck to you, and congrats

Thanks Davis, I don't remember if the Limited had a Blue Ink color. For the most part the Limited had fairly standard color's, mostly shades of grey, white, and black. You are right about the options, we probably will not add anything else to this vehicle. The only things we might get in the future is a roof top cargo box, if we need more storage. Other than that maybe a trailer hitch, we have timeshare and we might get the trailer hitch if we get into bicycling. But other than those two things I don't see what else we could add, the vehicle has everything we can possible want.
Very nice. Enjoy.
i think i got a lemon...................................................
