I am a happy guy. Both u-joints were shot on my '01 Escape (V-6 4x4 w/ 132k miles). We thought the whole drive axle had to be replaced. My local repair guy called NAPA, and the u-joints were listed individually. Had them installed last Wednesday.
Total cost (parts & labor): $167.93!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A local driveshaft shop does rebuilds. The balance the entire assembly, you (or your mechanic) just have to do the removal and installation. Supposed to be superior to just replacing parts. How good the balance is I don't know. But their business is growing, so I figure it is something to look into in the future should I need some U-joints replaced.
