There is a whole lot of stuff going on in this image, what specifically? There are 2 cam/valve covers (one missing something and can see the timing chains), motor mount, a coolant hose, a whole lot of oil and gunk, and so on.

The rocker cover is also called the valve covers. You are missing the oil filler cap.

That's when I noticed the big hole in the front section of the rocker cover!

It's too cold to work outside here in Ontario, so I have temporarily patched the hole with JB Weld putty. Waiting on better weather to comelplete the repair.I had oil spewing all over the place!

Ok, I see the hole. Someone dropped something on the valve cover, breaking it. Here is nothing moving below the cover, that close to the edge. Clean real good, fix with expoxy putty. https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-826...ords=epoxy+putty+sticks&qid=1676501445&sr=8-3
This is intriguing, that hole, is inline with timing sprocket, (compare position to the back side), and this doesn't just happen.
Any other story to this?

I agree, hard to tell if it was caused by internal timing chain, or external force, but looks like it was the timing chain from the inside as the rough edge is sawed from many contacts from the outside.
I think if something came loose in the upper drive train, the engine would be making a horrible noise and failing in short order. Iv'e see connecting rods punch holes in the block, but yet to seen anything punch a hole in the valve cover.

there should not be too much pressure behind that cover.
To get it done correctly, you would actually have to remove the cover, and make sure it was 100% clean before using the JB Weld
it probably won't stick too good otherwise.
first picture shows a little tiny hole, did you poke at it or something to make it as big as it is?
Point being, all that debris is now inside of your cylinder head, clogging oil galleys, banging against your lifters, and possibly working their way down to your valve seats. You're going to have to pull the cover, and clean it all.
I would say first thing you need to do is pull off the plastic cover that covers the top of the engine, and see how much of that valve cover damage extends beyond what you seeI was told it is part of the rocker cover, however, I can not find a picture of a replacement part that looks right.
Search your year, make and model, along with your engine, and you should see it listed.
I am seeing this, and it looks like you if you are a 3 L V6
200 bucks new. You might be able to shop it now that you have a part number. There are often deals for the whole set, including gaskets on eBay.
If the one is dry rotted, I would strongly suggest doing the pair.
In the event that they dry rot, I would not use scrapyard parts.
I would look for a duplicate without the hole at a u-pull or pick-a-part where you can remove the part yourself. Should be cheap. If not, get some plastic, scuff the area, and use JBWeld to attach the plastic as a patch.

Im with Mountain... I would pull it off and inspect under it... By the picture, I think something inside chewed on this spot. And if you havent done so, while you take this valve cover off... be a good time to replace the rear camshaft seal bracket. Dont buy a rebuild kit as the camshaft seal is GLUED in.... Part # 9L8Z-6B293-A is the replacement part. Just had to do my 2011.
I then ran across this video. Is there any possible way that one of these bolt heads broke off and danced around the timing chain until it finally shot out? After seeing this video, and the hole in your cover, id def be pulling and inspecting.
