Hello ... I've got a 2010 escape all wheel drive I'd like to try to do front and rear wheel bearings myself just wondering on the type of bearing puller I need or hub bearing puller I'm in Canada does anybody have any ideas the OEM is like $600 and there's so many different types out there not quite sure which is the best for my escape if somebody can help me out with some info I'd appreciate it

Hey Brew,
You will need a shop press to do this work. They are not small, they are not expensive… You just have to have room for one.
I have seen people make do with a 12 ton, but if you got the dough… 20 is preferred
The way that most backyard mechanics do this work, you should be prepared to have an alignment done after.
Most mechanics will buy a hub & bearing assembly, it is cheaper than the time involved.

Okay awesome thanks wow that's crazy I understand that these bearing skill couple times a year does that sound of right I use the car for deliveries everyday so I hope I don't have to replace wheel bearing every three or four months like I heard

The first time I did my front wheel bearings, I pressed them in and out, they failed again within a couple years. It turns out there was some defect in the OEM hub. (it is disappointing that Ford never did a recall on them)
Hub bearings do not fail catastrophically, they start off making noise which progressively gets louder and louder.(meaning they let you know they are failing) I don't think anybody has died from a bearing failure
I have not had any issues since replacing the hub and bearing, and I am at 200 K on the 09. This issue was apparently only with the front, as my rear wheel bearings are still OE

Plenty of youtube videos on how to change front-wheel drive vehicle bearings. Year/make or model does not really matter, they are all about the same. Yes, a press is needed. If the bearing has been bad for a while, the hub flange will be ruined and needs to be replaced also. Best option, buy the complete unit and get back on the road making money, instead of loosing money while the vehicle is down. Another option, buy new flange hub and bearing. Take the parts down to your friendly automotive repair shop and ask them to press it on for you. We do it all the time and charge around $120-150.

Hello, I'm nick the new guy and I may be a little late to help you out. However, click on this link and you can buy the whole steering knuckle assembled. You won't have to worry about pressing any bearing out. It is more expensive but it's easier, quicker, and provides peace of mind that the bearing is installed correctly. 2010 Ford Escape Front 2 Piece Suspension Knuckle Kit with Steering Knuckle TRQ BHA34217
Great 1st post! so i took a look and even for a 2003 and cheaper , only if they were cheap out here it'd save a lot of swearing and banged fingers (without a press that is) :censored:

I have pressed in wheel bearings before and had them go bad within 6 months. I'm sure it was something I was doing, so went it came to my daughter's escape I had to find one that was a complete hub assembly. Otherwise, I too would be swearing and throwing my tools, which is probably how I lose my 10mm sockets.

Lol , i nearly also had to admit myself to the casualty department for war wounds after my last effort , i also had to belt it for ages just to get it to start moving with one of those pictured and a bit of pipe but once it started to move the cheap puller took over and did the job fortunately . the new bearing is good AND quite .

I told my wife I needed a 12-ton press to do the bearings. Really I wanted a new toy.
I don't know if it would be easier, but I use to have a piece of round stock metal welded to a bearing race. I would use it to remove and set the bearings. Although, these bearings don't have a race if I remember correctly.

I just did the front wheel bearings on my 2012 Escape XLT about 6 months ago. I watched MANY YouTube videos on this project before starting. The hardest part was the removal of the old bearings and installing the new bearings. I rented a bearing puller from my local parts store and it was a miserable mistake. Although the slide hammer did come in handy during the tear down process, the rest of it was basically useless. Come to find out it was a rear bearing puller and it was not for front wheel drive front bearings. So I checked around on the phone and found out the bearing puller at most auto parts stores was about $300 - $400. There was no way I was going invest that much into a tool I would use twice and not use it again.
Then I found this place called Harbor Freight and I’m glad I did. They had a front wheel bearing puller (and installer) in stock and priced right just waiting for me on their shelf.

It did the trick. Removed and installed the bearings with simple instructions and quality tools. Well worth the investment and I’m so glad I did. I don’t feel so bad buying a tool at this price and not ever using it again. Both the bearings were done and I’ve had no problems out of them whatsoever.
