Hi guys,

I hope you can help my old man out. My dad told me today that the windshield washer isn't working in his Escape on either the front or rear window. He has added fluid already and it didn't take too much so the reservoir isn't low. What troubles me is that you cannot hear the pump when you engage either the front or rear washer. FWIW, it has been below 20F the past few days around here :frozen: I know you can hear the pump when it's working because we had my Escape on-hand for comparison.

Is it possible for the pump itself to freeze and not make any noise at all? Dad only drives a 1.5 miles to work so his Escape seldom reaches operating temperature during his "commute." Even when the fluid won't spray in my Escape, I can still hear the pump whirring.

Could it be a bad fuse?

Could the washer pump have just died?

Is it a common thing to fail? Dad's Escape officially turned 10 years old last month so I guess that's a possibility. I never heard of one crapping out before...

I couldn't do a very thorough investigation since it's like 13F and dark outside. And nope, no garage either. :D

Any insight?

I was afraid of it being buried down in the depths of the engine compartment... I looked up the pump quickly and it was only $24 so that's not too big of a deal. Perhaps I'll borrow Grandma's garage tomorrow and see if I can figure this out.

If anyone else has any input, it would be very much appreciated!

**EDIT**

Our local mechanic friend took a look and found everything to be frozen. He defrosted everything in his heated garage and put the winter-grade washer fluid in the tank. All is well now with both washers.
