I just put a trailer hitch on my new to me 2012 escape and when I was doing the wiring I came across a wiring harness attached to the back of the rear bumper cover on the driver side. At first I thought it was a factory trailer wiring harness, but it doesn't look like it from video instructions online, anyone know what it is for. I'll try to post a picture.

That looks like what we call a 'dead connector' basically a plug on the end of a harness.
It's likely to be the end that the factory harness plugs into.
I can follow mine back later this morning.
If so, then instead if cutting, taping whatnot, you could take a factory trailer harness, plug in and done. Not sure where to source that.

Factory harness is on left hand side as such:
If this is what you found, I'd hope that there is a pigtail available to plug and play.
